    Quite a statement
I thought that OneCare could be "good enough"
It´s quite a shame that a AV coming from a giant like Microsoft and being not free does not live up to industry standards.

The less than adequate virus scanner in One Care is only one problem with it. Users are also having major problems with installation and activation. To make matters even worse, your installation is *forever* linked to the passport account you use to purchase it and cannot be transferred. Support for the US version is bad, and it seems European support might even be worse. I would avoid it at all costs.

It is simply not possible for anybody to be the best in everything . Microsoft make very good OS and excellent Office products (and other programs) but they cannot be best in everything . ;)

It's absolutely NOT the Kasperksy engine. Microsoft bought RAV (Romanian AntiVirus) several years ago, and used it as the staring point for developing its own Microsoft engine. The current Microsoft product has been significanly altered (I won't say improved), just like they bought Giant Antiswpyware and then dumbed it down to create Microsoft Antispyware, which then became Windows Defender. The current AV/AS engine in WLOC 1.5 is Microsoft's own product, AKAIK.

Thanks for the correction. I am thinking that there is a free AV that uses the stripped down Kaspersky engine. o_O
    Thanks,

    Thanks, I had it confused. Or I was confused!o_O o_O :D

I suspect it would not be a bad freebie, but since it is stripped down, it might not be as good overall as Avast. Any opinions?

    Best,
    Jerry

I don't find that surprising at all, given that AVG has made serious efforts in improvement over the past few months. :)

OneCare certainly has potential to be a great product, but at this time, it is not good at all. Absolutely unrecommended!

I was thinking of the AOL Active Virus Shield, and comparing it with Avast or other freebie. Since that is off topic I'll drop it.

    Thanks,
    Jerry

I don´t expect that OneCare has to be the best, but, at least, it has to pass VB100 certification.
I know that :) The phrase that impressed me most was
It sounds like OneCare is way behind the standards.

The recent PC-Welt tests done by AV-test.org also suggest the same thing. :)

    windows onecare

ok, after trying the latest build of onecare, i can (so far) say its more stable, has anyone else noticed it seems more stable?

we know detection is not quite there yet, however MS are a big company and im sure it wont take long to challenge the big boys.

    anyway,

defragment > isnt this just the one implented in windows anyway?
remove files > isnt this just disk cleanup?
firewall > isnt this basically the vista firewall with a bit of tweaking?

and then you have the AV...

seems stupid to put it in the software when it is basically using tools already in windows, they should keep it strictly antivirus and control there efforts on that.

anyway, we shall see how it goes... its the latest one im giving a try on vista (Still..... waiting for dr.web to be vista compatible *Sighs)

    Re: windows onecare

It is pretty much what you said except that the OC firewall is more user friendly. In XP, it gives you outgoing control. In Vista's case, even though it has outgoing control it is turned off by default and rules have to be set manually. In OneCare, the firewall acts more like other firewalls, a learning mode with popups.

I tried it for a little while just to see what it was about. Though I liked the firewall, the other elements of the suite did not impress me.

    Re: windows onecare

i think for such a new av on the market, whether its based on something else or not ... 82% is good for such an early start, and with microsoft being the massive company that they are, and the creators of the OS that most people use, i can see them pushing the big AV companys all the way, only time will tell i guess.

I was wondering, can onecare be custom installed w/o the AV? I would like to have the firewall w/Nod32.
