Backup Software: O & O DiskImage
Here are my comments on the trial version of OO & O DiskImage that I downloaded, and ran, earlier today.
1 Comments based on reading some of the stuff at the O & O web site and the User’s Guide
(a) I saw no mention of a support forum. Is there a forum for O & O’s products?
(b) Seems that the only telephone support is in Germany.
(c) O & O uses “incremental”, but I saw no mention of “differential” backup, although, one might achieve that effect by choosing the appropriate base archive file.
(d) Volumes may be mounted from archives, but changes cannot be saved. This is bad because it does not allow, e.g., removing a virus from an archive, or making corrections to file times, or … .
(e) I found no way to create a Start CD. It seems that O & O DiskImage comes with a Start CD that uses MSFT Windows, and allows for the loading of additional drivers, just like a normal Windows install. But I did not see an answer to the following:
(i) How does one create he Start CD if one purchases a downloadable version of the software, i.e., if there is such a thing as a download purchase?
(ii) How does one add the drivers to the CD? It would be rather tedious to supply the drivers each time.
(iii) Although the trial version is supposed to be fully functional, there is no means to create a Start CD, so one cannot test some critical functions. I sure want a way to create the Start CD rather than taking the chance that physical copies go bad. I guess if I make umpteen copies, I am safe.
(f) Vista is not listed as a supported product.
(g) Incremental images can be merged
2 Comments based on installing and running O & O DiskImage
(a) No icon is installed on the desktop. explorer bar, or system tray, nor did I find an option to create one. I manually created a shortcut, but a user should not have to do that.
(b) I looked and could not find any way to create a Start CD.
(c) No way to specify, and save, tasks/jobs.
(d) No way to schedule.
(e) Did not find a way to force a verify to automatically occur after the backup completes.. A verify can be manually selected after the backup is run. Bad design.
(f) The interface is very poor. There are two progress bars. One shows the progress for the overall backup. The other shows the progress for the current action
When the program starts, the first action is something like “Detecting used sectors”, but there is no identification of the drive being scanned, and it took about 10 minutes before the progress bar started filling in.
After, the program finished detecting used sectors, the progress bar moved very slowly. When finished with the first stage, the Overall Progress bar indicated that only 8% had been completed.
The program, then again started detecting used sectors. Again, this took significant time with no indication of what was happening. Upon completion of that detection, the sectors were processed. After this second stage, the Overall Progress bar indicated that 25% had been completed.
Note that when doing the above, the drives were very silent, which indicates that the drives are not processed in the expected order. Why do I believe that?
There are 3 hard drives (2 logical volumes on the first, 3 on the second, and 5 on the third). One can clearly distinguish the 1st drive as it is rather noisy, the other 2 are quiet.
So after doing the first two stages above, the program again started detecting used sectors and it was noisy.
Unfortunately, there is nothing displayed to indicate what volume is being processed. nor could I find a log file.
(g) A BSOD occurred in program oodisr.sys while the program was going thru the 3rd detection stage.
I’ll defer on the current release of O & O DiskImage.
