Default ATI 9.1 Rescue media on USB will not boot

I have used Acronis 9.1 Workstation (build 3.71 to create a bootable rescue media on my USB stick.

After creating the rescue media the USB stick contains these files:
bootwiz.cfg
bootwiz.sys
dat2.dat
dat3.dat
mouse.com
spl1.exe

When booting from the USB i get the message "Missing Operating System".

My PC is a Dell Latitude D800 laptop.

Can anyone solve this problem?

What filesystem is your USB stick formatted to?
What size is the partition you are trying to boot from?
What BIOS setting are you using to boot from the usb stick?
What other USB related boot options are available in the BIOS?

Hello F,

The USB stick is FAT.
The USB partition is 499 MB
The BIOS is from Phoenix, the only USB related setting is "USB Emulation" (it is set to Enabled)

Regards,

Stig

Nothing in BIOS about "Boot from other" or whatsoever?

did you see if there is a upgrade for your BIOS? D800 should have the USB boot option, but cant remember how it is labelled.

Hi Stig,

You should have "Boot" options like USB-ZIP USB-HD USB-CD in your BIOS.

If you don't have these, have you checked to see if a BIOS update is available for your motherboard?

BIOS version is A13. That is the newest version.

Please find attached a jpeg showing BIOS settings.

As you can see on page 4 USB Emulation is enabled (according to doc this must be the case to allow booting from USB).

Regards,

Stig

Hi Stig,

I might be misunderstanding your screen - but it looks as if you have "diskette" selected as your first boot device. Assuming 'USB Storage Device' is the one you want, shouldn't you have pushed this to the top of the list.

Note that just to add fun to the mix, even if your Mobo/BIOS supports booting from USB flash sticks, it might not be compatible with your flash stick. I have two flash sticks, and prepared both in an identical way with TI9. One boots my PC the other one doesn't. I suggest you buy or borrow a totally different make and try that.

The other thing I would say is that the BIOSs I have booted from normally have about a number of USB boot options. These are things like USB ZIP, USB Hard Disk, USB CD. It is really hit and miss as to which one boots depending on the Mobo and flash disk. What I normally do is set all three to boot as 1st,2nd and 3rd boot disk to speed up working out which one it is.

Good luck

F.

Hello F,

You are right, the USB is not first in order but when F12 is pressed during boot-up a "one time boot menu" is shown and from there it is possible boot from e.g. USB.

I will try with a different USB stick.

Thanks,

Stig

Does anyone know a USB stick brand that is known to work as boot media?

Thanks,

Stig

I have three different types of hardware the one I have had most luck with is a "Peak 128 MB USB2.0". Note that this is no silver bullet, it is a Mobo/USB Stick compatibility issue.

I was able to get TI 9.0 and Disk Director Suite to boot from either of two USB flash sticks, but can get neither to boot from the sticks now that I've updated them with the latest build.

Ouch.

What process did you go through to do the update.
