Security Setup

Hi all,

My security setup is:

Avast! Anti-virus (Free Home Edition)
Comodo Firewall (Free Edition)
SG (Spyware Guard - Javacool) (Latest definitions available really old 2004!)
Advanced Spyware Remover

Any ideas if the above is "safe" enough to protect me from incoming and outgoing treats?

Yeah thats plenty of protection, if you are a safe surfer then you will have no trouble. I've never used that spyware program you mentioned but hopefully it has real time protection. If not you can try spyware terminator, windows defender or spybot s&d. In regards to spyware guard i've never used it but i hear its an ok program, i actually use arovax shield which is very similar.

You should probably consider cyberhawk for behavioral purposes. Add it to your security combo.

Thanks for info. Was also considering change IE to Firefox, always for security reasons. Any suggestions/comments?

Yes definitely change to firefox. Also download a free app called spywareblaster which will help immunize both firefox and IE.

Re Firefox, should I uninstall IE completely before installing Firefox.

I don't think you can uninstall IE under normal circumstances. Its part of windows. There are programs which can uninstall IE if you wish but its not necessary, and besides many apps these days seem to need IE installed for them to function. Firefox will run fine with IE still on your computer. When firefox loads up for the first time it will ask if you want to make it the default browser, click yes.

If you don't browse hacker/porn sites and do p2p sharing then your security is more than enough.

I do not browse hacker/porn sites but I do have ARES installed (p2p) to download music! So will this cause a probelm with Firefox? And with my current security setup, isn't it safe enough to download music from ARES?

Never attempt uninstall IE. There are programs out there that claim to be able to do so but they don't work 100% and always end up breaking your system.

Additionally you will still need IE to use Microsoft/Windows Update.

Good advice there! Most security software do insist on the IE as a installation requirement.

Downloading music should be alright, its when people start downloading games and applications etc... that it can become dangerous.

Theres always something out there especially when surfing the web that has a chance to slip through, and then try to execute, so far using Ghost Security Suite, I have caught and stopped many BAD things from running & executing, as I'm an explorer of many and any "STAY AWAY" sites. CyberHawk is a pretty good program but has been breached and unsuccessful
when put to the test, my test . Prevx1 maybe a program to consider and or System Safety Monitor. My personal preference is Ghost Security Suite as its been the most stable with no conflicts with my current setup.

Interesting post, i've only ever tried ghostwall, i'm interested to try out their security suite now.
