gaming problems

hello

I have just started the trial of looknstop after many a wasted hour on that ZA pro (hatefull little firewall)

Any way after install i launch a game for example COD2 and click the the Allow button when prompted , problem is the game launches but the ingame browser wont show any servers , same for CS/S and BF2.

Please tell me what im doing wrong

u need to create rules for those games to work.

open the game in a window (not fullscreen), and as u try to find a server, check the looknstop log window for blocked traffic. u can then create rules to allow that traffic.

bah what a complicated way around things

Managed to get it working by monitoring the logs and enabling the specific ports one of which being port 28960.

so i edit my rules and set the port application to cod2mp and then do a user specified port probe at shields up...............it failed

re-install ZA pro and all is fine again cod2 works fine and 28960 is stealthy , for all its faults ZA seems the better product , not nearly as complicated , much more user friendly , its a pain spending three quaters of an hour configuring your bloody firewall just to play a game

Yes mate i realised that before i installed it , i thought with it being rule based it would be more secure than the others but it seems not , as i discovered after creating rules for Call of Duty 2 and finding that the ports i use for it remain detectable AFTER the application has been closed?

the only way i could find around this was to create and save two sets of rules one which can be loaded for gaming and one for surfing , but im far too lazy and forgetfull to do all that

I have no such problems with ZA Pro (i have many other problems with it but a s afirewall its brill )

You could have solved it by configure those ports to be open only when COD2 was running and closed when COD2 was closed. But if you´re happy with ZA you should use it instead. LnS is safer but it is not for a newbie, unless he reads the help file carefully.

If you read my post properly you'll see i did indeed create that ruleset to run only with CoD2MPs_.exe , but as i said the port would be detectable with or without cod 2 running.

Im not happy with ZA entirely it makes my pc hang on bootup and shutdown and occasinally makes my start menu hang but until i find something better im stuck with it.

well theres plenty of other firewalls to use, just give them a test drive.

to name a few: comodo, jetico, kerio, and sygate.

Actually, if the rule was set to run only when the program runs, it wouldn't leave the port open when the program wasn't running. Sometimes programs will leave connections open even when exiting and LnS detects this as if the program is still running which in turn leaves the rule still enabled. I use LnS with Phantom``s ruleset and haven't had any problems passing inbound firewall tests such as ShieldsUp. I don't know if it matters, but the rule could also be placed at the top and it might be necessary to have it near the bottom to block intrusion attempts. I'm not sure about this since I don't use either the Basic or Enhanced rulesets (as stated, I use Phantom``s instead).

it doesnt actually show up as being an open port it shows as being "closed" but detectable as opposed to ZA showing "stealth"

to be honest im not even sure if it matters wht they fail and dont fail , its just making me paranoid. I was much happier when i had Norton internet security and was oblivious to all this nonsense lol problem is as a gamer i need maximum resources and thats why i decided to give norton the elbow and search for new.

If you are using ZA Pro(or other pait types) version 6.5 and above, it comes with a feature called Game Mode, which as its name suggests is for Gamers when they are playing games. TO use Game Mode, right click the ZA System Tray Icon and select "Game Mode". Check the ZA Help file if you you more details about how it works.

i can actually answer that. when u select Game Mode it will ask whether u want Allow or Deny. ZA will then either deny or allow all applications/dlls that request access, depending on which choice u wanted.

yep i know mate , my problem was with looknstop originally , i think with the thread being moved from the LNS boards a bit of confusion has crept in

Im currently testin Kerio sunbelt , mainly because its only £10 ($19.99) if i decide to buy lol . Whats your opinions on it?

I am behind a router, so I prefer to turn off the software firewall while playing on line games, and then turn it back on when finished. I have nod and BoClean running while playing so I still feel quite secure.

First, moving the thread is really strange it is about LN's, isn't it?

If there is a rule to open port, even if only when certain application runs, this means port would be at that time open for any application?

If so, how would it be more secure than ZA, where port is open only for one application?

Not that it really matters but I feel certain if you take the time to re-read the thread you'll make note there were numerous comments made not only by the thread starter but by others that caused the thread move to be a no brainer.

Let's Please continue the discussion with the understanding and clarification for those concerned that it indeed can be a generic firewall discussion given the obvious direction it took....almost from the get go.
