Ubuntu - I have a question

Hello,
I see that Ubuntu is rather popular and gains more momentum among users. I'm thinking about writing a guide similar to Installing SUSE - one with Installing (K)ubuntu. Would you like to see that one?

The installer for Ubuntu/Kubuntu is slightly more textbased and less simple than SUSE. I'd certainly like to see it. Particularly the partition management and dual boot setup. It appears more simple in SUSE it would seem.

My two cents. It would be helpful.

I have tried a few linix Dixtros and everyone always suggests (K)Ubuntu to be the best. But it was very slow for me when i tried it. But i was not sure if it was my system specs. Or if i did not have it setup properly.

Sure It's different because it's text based rather than graphical compared with SuSE and very popular for new users. But doesn't Ubuntu already have a walkthrough available? An installation guide for Gentoo would be even better ... as it'd be likely the most difficult to install.

Whichever you decide, I would be very interested.

I guess if the existing walk through for Kubuntu is already very good, then maybe just your review on how it compares with SUSE from a Windows migrant perspective would be more valuable.

If the existing Kubuntu is lacking in regards to a Windows perspective, then yes.

the difference is the desktop environment. ubuntu uses gnome and kubuntu uses kde. the default apps for email/web browsing/file manager are also different.

But Ubuntu and Kubuntu are basically the same except for the Gnome/KDE difference.

I'm installing Kubuntu as we speak and screenshooting the procedure.
Why do you say it's text based? You place the cd / dvd into the tray, it boots into live environment, you click install and it shoots. But I will cover certain textual aspects, such as graphic card, updates etc. Hopefully, you'll like it.

teh install is called text-based because theres no graphics or buttons just text and color. u use teh keyboard to input and change options.

That's not what I see. The installer is keyboard + mouse, very much GUI!!
I'm doing it at the moment. It's either those South American mushrooms or something.

I don't know if it is possible to find this out...
Can Kubuntu and/or SUSE setup program natively shrink an NTFS partition?
My hard drive is currently filled with NTFS partitions and they will need to be made smaller to make room for the Linux reiserfs partitions.
Can the setup programs do this, or should I use the GParted Live CD first to handle this?

Hello,
SUSE can, because during the install it can ask you to shrink the Windows partition when it installs. But I would recommend you use Gparted. Do one thing at a time - not install new OS AND shrink a partition with one OS already installed. Kind of risky. First, shrink. Reboot. Check everything works etc. Then, install the second OS - Linux.

i mustve chosen a different option when installing kubuntu.

one thing i wonder is why the gui install is started from a live kubuntu session.

They changed it then from the installer in the last version then .... That'll make it easier for new users.

In time between my wife, work, porn, and other hobbies, I hope to write down this one soon - I still owe you the SUSE + VMware + Windows - it's ready, just need to upload it (soon...). I'll include basic installation options, graphic card installation, internet connection sharing, basic concepts like apt-get, how to install kernel source, vmware tools, automated updates, etc, links to forums, the usual stuff.
I'll keep you informed.

P.S. dog, nice to see that distros are getting better and frendlier.

P.S.S. I think they give you the live cd to get the feel of things before you install. And it's kind of convenient live cd + installer in one cd.

it has been graphical since Dapper came out.

i think you can still use the text-based install if you want, it might have slightly more options, i'm not totally sure though.

Does the latest Ubuntu CD for PC (6.06 LTS) also contain Kubuntu? Or is Kubuntu on a separate CD?

its separate but u can install KDE in ubuntu if u wish.
