Question what's your opinion about those DOS virus?

Are those DOS virus still popular?

Is it an important feature to find and clean those DOS virus for a AV software?

Your opinions are very important.

Personally, (note I am not a Pro like Andreas, Mike or others), but I find them to be almost useless these days. Some companies seem to like to "pad" detection numers with these old Viruses from 1993.

I do believe there was a lengthy discussion here as to the relevance of them in AV tests.

do not worry, I will show both numbers (with and without DOS) and the one without DOS will be in bold, like in all tests of this year.

Am I correct in assuming that old DOS viruses will simply not function on a Windows PC (16 bit vs. 32 bit)? I am a bit skeptical of trying it out on my PC.

DOS viruses aren't seen so much these days, but many AVs do still keep definitions of such just in case. The risk of getting infected by such viruses is pretty slim these days, but it mustn't be overlooked.

they are very old indeed, but some may run on Windows also as far as I know. You can run some by command prompt and I think you'll get infected.
NOD32 has strong heuristic detection for them as I've noticed.

Some of those DOS viruses may still exceute from the command prompt and real-mode DOS.

Windows 95/98/98SE machines have a higher chance of getting infected.

Windows Me/2000/XP users have a lower chance of getting infected by DOS viruses.

IMO DOS virus detection is still relevant to some degree, since some of them can run on Windows, but one should not give DOS virus samples any sort of priority.

I have read all ther above replies carefully, then I got a conclusion:

If Rising antivirus wanna become a first class antivirus product, we MUST deal with those OLD DOS virus.

not necessarily JosepWang.
Rising should concentrate on Trojans, Backdoors, Rootkits and ITW worms, than DOS viruses.
Are you working for Rising or why did you use "we"?

Joesph Wang works for Rising. He referred to Rising AntiVirus as a product, and "we" as the team behind the product. Makes sense.

I agree though, Trojans, backdoors, rootkits and spyware are more important than DOS viruses today, which is why I said that DOS viruses should be detected, but not given any type of priority.

Firecat, thx. I'm working for Rising now.

I totally agree with your opinions about Trojans, backdoors etc.

In China, there are more and more local trojans. The most popular one should be:
Huigezi, or Grey pegion.

I am a Chinese living in Shanghai. There really exists an GFW. e.g, I can not view the “Wikipedia” site because there are some explainations not good to the communist party on it. I have to use Proxy or Mirror site or some software like Tor. Some Taiwan sites are also blocked. “The GFW is in the charge of China Internet Police, the hardware is bought from CISCO"-from Wikipedia
