CCleaner (crap and registry cleaner) + WinASO RegDefrag are good freeware for the beginning.

I've been using TuneUp Utilities 2005 and now 2006. It does a good job and I never had any problem with it.

There is more then software to maintain on a PC. About every 6 months to a year splurge and pick up a can of compressed air. Pull of your side panel and give it a good blowing out. Paying special attention to the heat sink on the processor, power supply fan(s), case fan(s) & any case vents. Your PC hardware will thank you.

Tune-up Utilities 2006 is really good. You can find a lot of good reviews on it. I have been using it for two years, I have never had a problem with it. It is one of my favorite software. I trialed System Mechanic 6 several weeks ago when it was free after rebate. I had bad experience with it. It does not tell what it is doing when fixing problems (deleting registry entries or files). It would be fine if it could fix the problems correctly. Unfortunately, I found that it deletes needed items. It also successfully put my computer in endless reboot mode. At the end, I had to reboot from CD-ROM and restore my system. I would put it in the garbage can even if it is given to me free. Maybe I am the only unlucky one with it. You can try it and see if it works for you. |
