Default How do I Save/Print a single posting?

What's the best way to SAVE, as a file, a single posting in a thread?

What's the best way to PRINT a single posting in a thread?

To make sure I get what it is I want to print I just copy and paste it to word pad and print it from there or save it as a flle. Or you could look under thread tool/show printable version. see screen shot. I hope this helps.

Take a screenshot, and paste it in M$ paint. Trim away the parts you don't want, and save as a .jpeg/.jpg . Post it as a attachment or put it on a file hosting service or your web site if you have one.

Thanx, that appears to be the solution.

Default Showing Single Post IN CONTEXT

I second Howard Kaikow's request (how to SAVE or PRINT a single post), and WSFuser's reply ("click on the post number to view it individually"). But I would add: in the single post page, include a real link to the parent thread. IOW, in the current page, I would just replace:Hereafter, more detailed explanation.

--ooOOoo--

Unfortunately when a post is showed alone on the forum, it contains no way to see it in context; its URL contains two instances of the post number (hence an useful one and an useless one), but zero instance of the thread number. Sure it contains in turn a sub-link with a label carrying the subject of the parent thread, but with an URL that again contains a reference to the post, but none to the thread. This makes time-consuming to find back the involved thread.

Example: in Aleksandr Isakov's post of Sun 28 May 2006 19:47 GMT, the link provided in the "Please also take a look at this post by Alexey about this issue" phrase, opens a window with just the said particular post, and the sub-link it contains, Buid 3567: Apparent debris in registry from earlier builds, is misleading since its label is the name of the thread, while its URL points only to the post alone, thus out of context. So I would replace that link with Alexey's post of Mon 24 April 2006 09:51 GMT in context.

--ooOOoo--

BTW, as shown in that example, Date and Time could be shown IMO complete with TO, as I proposed in Date and Time COMPLETE (with Time Offset from Greenwich); and titles should be actually built as titles of messages, as I proposed in Present the "Title:" case EMPTY (here above I made for it by replacing the meaningless "Re: ..." titles with dates of posting).

This bares repeating here, (as I replied to your other suggestions), since you seem to think we're the designers of vBulletin:

Michel Merlin - Also note that we are using standard vBulletin software here. We did not write this software. If you wish to suggest improvements then take it up with the vendor at their site:

http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/index.php

You seem to know a lot about specs and standards, (probably a lot more than me), so I'm certain you must know how the "#" portion of a link is used on HTML webpages. It allows a webpage to be opened directly to a specific named section on that page. That portion of those links is added by vBulletin, even when redundant (in the case where a link was made using postid rather than threadid), because some browsers will not position themselves at the right place in a thread when following such a link without it also being used.

One of the complexities of making the change you suggest would be that user posted links (like the ones you added in your post), that use threadids as the main portion of the link, would become inaccurate if a post is split off to a new thread of its own, or merged into a different thread. But, references based solely on postid will always be correct in terms of reaching the desired post, even if it has moved since the person first posted a link referencing it.

The software can not edit the post contents automatically, so it allows for links to be based solely on a specific postid number. Our previous forum software, YaBB SE, had links based on combined thread and post ID numbers, and every split and merge wrecked all the cross reference links members had placed in their posts. Links based just on postid never go bad.

Default IMAGE vs FILE of a post

Cochise, PrintKey looks (from its description - I didn't try it) an efficient package to dump/crop/convert/save|print, as an image, the part you want of your screen (a single program of only 384 to do it all). However this is probably not what Howard Kaikow was looking for: IMO he (as most of us) wanted a file, which would be smaller, more accurate, more powerful (editable for instance).

What I want is to isolate a particular posting as a normal HTML file.
In general, there is no need to save more than the original article in the thread or the article which presents t solution.

Default The issue here was IMAGE vs HTML FILE

Howard Kaikow, it's difficult for me to believe that you really missed that the problem here was between as an image and file - two things that were in italics in my posts but that you de-emphasized in your "quote" of it. So your habit of repeating entirely a post, not only dilutes the ideas as usual (and as I recalled to you on Tue 23 May 2006 16:30 GMT, "BTW2"), but here in addition biases the "quotation", and deroutes it.

Now this is another issue, people here were dealing with how to View or Save or Print a post alone, and weren't AFAIK implying that the usefulness of dealing in some cases with a post alone would draw an uselessness "In general" of dealing with several posts or with a whole thread. None brought such issue here so far, and personally I would find it irrelevant here (and I would disagree with it in general: for me, a good forum - as this one - enables the user to View, Save, Print, anything he wants, Single Posts, Multiple Posts, Whole Threads).

The topic of this thread is a single post, as I stated in the lead article in this thread.

Look who went out of the issue (and in addition, see its context):
