Hi,

I seem to have a issue when I use Universal Restore to restore a image of a win2k system onto a new pc. It seems that the mouse and the keyboards dun work and I am pretty sure that the systme is not hang either.

Pls revert as soon as possible.

Hi,

Universal Restore "injects" the correct storage drivers and the HAL. After a reboot the system can boot and the "normal" Windows-Hardware-Detection process runs and installs the needed drivers for keyboard and mouse.

Until the installation of these drivers mouse and keyboard don't work. However on some systems people run tuning tools which prevent ANY installation of new drivers.....if this happens: make a repair installation of your windows. In other situations: just sit down and relax. In the worst case you have to reboot your machine for the new chipset drivers (turning off by pressing and NOT holding the power-button is a normal shutdown).

I've seen this too, on certain computers, and couldn't progress either.

So does anyone knows a way round it? I have tried many times, restarting, waiting and so on and I am just stuck at that point. Any body else had the same problem.

Everything seems fine on Windows XP.

I had this on a test machine also.

Everything boots fine, no hang (as you see the startup of multiple programs) however, keyboard and mouse are undetected. Mine was XP SP2

new hardware is detected and you can't continue (no way to click yes)

Please inform in this thread if you had the problem or if you resolved it please.

I have this issue as well when restoring a winxp sp2 image onto a machine using universal restore. It seems that windows will detect drivers for devices in an unusual order, where usb devices are detected last during device driver setup. This would not be a problem, except that it often seems to become stuck during driver installation of the other devices, and with no usb support (no usb mouse or keyboard), unless you have ps/2 devices you are stuck. The only way around it seems to be to have a ps/2 mouse plugged in or to keep rebooting the system each time it gets stuck on a driver, untill the system finnaly installs usb devices (usually about 3 times).

If I remember correctly, both my mouse and keyboard are PS/2 interface. I rebooted a couple of times and still the mouse and keyboard are not detected.

Perhaps win2k works a little differently than winxp, the issue I generally have is that windows will not find my usb mouse or keyboard, but it always finds my ps/2 devices. I'm looking online to see if anyone has solved this problem before, specifically I am searching for "sysprep not installing keyboard / mouse drivers", as this is a similiar issue to ours that many adminstrators have had to deal with, whereas not too many people are using acronis universal restore yet. In general, there are many different solutions to this problem, and right now it looks like forcing the mouse and keyboard drivers to be installed using universal restore should solve the problem. I'll let you know if I get this to work...

I've solved my issue, but I don't think its the same as what you are experiencing with win2k. As it turns out, winxp was crashing during device driver install because registry permissions were somehow set to read only for administrator account, rather than full control as it should be. This seems to affect usb hub specifically, and after fixing it, worked perfectly on my test machine. As for your problem, it seems to be a win2k problem; you may be able to fix it by forcing the mouse drivers to be installed earlier though. To do this, copy the following into a folder from c:\windows\inf : msmouse.inf , keyboard.inf , layout.inf . Afterwards, during universal restore, force the install of the keyboard and mouse drivers by adding them (click add -> select keyboard.inf from the folder which contains these files) in the first dialogue that comes up after selecting to use universal restore. You only need to use add once as it will collect all drivers in that folder. It should generate a list of alot of different keyboard / mouse combinations in the drivers list if it worked ok. Then continue as normal for your restore...

I tried this with WinXP. It was a good thought but I'm afraid it doesn't work. When Windows booted there was no mouse or keyboard input and I couldn't continue. PS2 devices.

I came back to this problem again as I tested my image on a different machine, and unfortunately the same problem occured where winxp would not detect my usb drivers. I found that the device manager would hang once, twice, sometimes even three times while my devices were being detected, forcing a hard reboot (holding down the power button). Eventually I decided to take a different approach and so far, it has worked perfectly...

I noticed that my bartpe (with xpe plugin) cd never had any issues installing devices even though it is run on many many different machines; So, I looked into how it accomplished this, as bartpe and winxp are so similiar, and I found that it used the program called hwpnp by paraglider http://www.paraglidernc.com/4436.html. This program was designed for bartpe but I found it still works very well in a full winxp, and so I decided to try to use it to detect my devices during the first boot of my image. Sure enough, with the program running at first boot, in roughly 5 minutes all of my devices were installed, including usb mouse and keyboard. It asks me to reboot and after doing so all drivers were installed and there was nothing left for me to do...

Plz note that I have only tested this on winxp, as I do not have a copy of win2k; I believe that they are similiar enough to where either will work using this method but I do not know for sure... And as always, if something gets messed up, I don't take responsibility for it (not that it should).

Below is a brief howto for installing hwpnp onto windows first boot; I am assuming that you are either running from a bartpe cd or from winxp/win2k, and that you can read/write to the partition which will be the image. If you are running from inside the os, skip steps 5 and 8, and use (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce) key in step 6 :
1) download the hwpnp bartpe plugin from paragliders site

2) extract its contents
3) in the files folder, copy hwpnp.exe and hwpnpdll.dll onto the partition which contains your image, into the folder hwpnp (eg my partition which will be my image is on g:\ so i would copy those files into the g:\hwpnp\ folder.
4) Start regedit (start -> run -> regedit) ; If you are not familiar with the registry, you should brush up before you continue...
5) Load the software registry hive from the image,
to do this select the hkey_local_machine key,
then select file -> load hive,
look in the following folder in your image partition for the "software" file \windows\system32\config\ (eg, mine is at g:\windows\system32\config\software),
give it a name, for example, Remote_Software
6) In the Remote_Software key, find and select the runonce key (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Remote_Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce)
7) Select edit -> new -> string value. Name it HWPNP, and double click it and paste the following into its contents, without the qoutes "C:\hwpnp\HWPnP.exe /p +all" (if this will not be the c:\ drive at bootup, make any necessary changes)
8 ) Select the Remote_Software key and then file -> unload hive from the menu.

All done.... the next time you boot up hwpnp will start running and attempt to install all devices without user input (so no catch 22's when windows finds your new keyboard and you have to click next to install it =] ). Once windows asks you to restart (average 5 minutes), that's when the driver installation is done and you should reboot.

Make sure to backup the partition to a new image before running it again, so that your changes are not lost; if this happens, you will have to edit the registry again (steps 4 through 8 ).

I am having the same problem with 9.1 build 3694. Did anyone try the regedit solution with windows 2000? If so, to you edit the registry of the computer that you are cloning prior to the clone (backup)? Is the any other work arounds? Did Acronis come up with a solutions? Why doesn't the force drive work?

I'm having a similar problem with a recent version (9.1 bld 3854). The new PC boots and starts installing drivers until it gets to one that requires a "Yes or No" answer to a digital signature/certificate prompt. Since keyboard and mouse are not working yet I can not click yes or no. This causes a "stuck" situation. Machine does not appeared to be crashed. I'm using auto logon so I can see the Desktop icons etc.
I tried the Regedit solution above but it did not work. I saw the HWPNP installing drivers but it did not solve the problem.

The machine is running Windows 2000 Pro with the latest service packs.

Does anybody know of a registry entry to turn "off" the digital certificate prompt?

I got rid of the certificate prompt by changing "policy" the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Driver Signing
To "00"

!@%#!$@
Now there is a Hardware Installation Wizard "Finished" prompt.

Any help is appreciated.

FYI- I did a Universal restore to the new machine from another machine with identical hardware running W2K Server. Restored without a hitch. The machine I am having trouble with is the same exact hardware with W2k Pro. The destination machine was the same for both attempts.
