Default Outlook Express To Thunderbird Question

I read conflicting info on this. Does anyone here know if mail in Thunderbird is more easily archived, and possibly more readable in the future, than Outlook Express? I've always hated that OE stores its mail in a file, where a readable plain text version must be "extracted" using third party tools. HTML is even harder to keep formatted, etc. That means, you better always have a copy of OE way into the future to be able to read your mail archives.

How does Thunderbird handle this?

Thunderbird's mail files are in the standard plain text "mbox" format, which almost all mail programs can use or import.
