Just wondered, if any of you guys out there find that most of the MAINSTREAM magazines and websites out there that review software tend to give you an overview of the features (which you can read on the box) and then a quick test and a score... I gave up on buying magazines and avoiding the big websites that review software for this reason and find forums like this place tend to be the best place to look.
But as its been a fair few years since I even looked at PC Format or PC Pro or PC Plus or cnet.com, about.com etc, does anyone have any current trusty recommendations for magazines, websites ( and forums), or are they just as bad as ever ? |

I used to be an avid reader of mags, getting 2 or 3 every month and sometimes more when interesting things were going on in the industry. But I haven't really kept up with any mags at all for the past 10 years or so, since I can get all the news I need from the web. My main sources at the moment are forums such as this one, SpywareWarrior and DSL Reports, the BBC News site, the software sites such as Snapfiles and Softpedia and a few key blogs such as Sunbelt and Sysinternals.
I subscribe to a few daily email newsletters from silicon.com, TheRegister and ComputerWeekly. I also get a weekly email from PCPro Mag which can be useful. I'm also tied up with CIX Conferencing (www.cix.co.uk) which I've been on for around 18 years which is another useful forum for information. With that lot, I probably don't have any time left to read magazines, and I manage to keep well up to date with what's going on, more so than most other folks I mix with. |
