Default does anyone know how to use Privoxy?

hi, do you know how Privoxy works? it's keeping zipped logs i don't want, i think it's storing cookies for every site i visit, and i'd like to just replace some of the files with someones elses filters.

or if you know where there's a good forum i can browse that would help. thanks

I don't know of any forums but the included user manual is pretty straight forward. Anything Privoxy does (like keeping logs) has to be explicitly permitted in the config, user action or default action file or it won't be done. Eliminate the line in config.txt that specifies where the logfile is kept and no logfile will be made. I'm pretty sure no file of cookies are kept by Privoxy.

I don't run Privoxy fulltime and when I do, it's using a pretty trimmed down configuration so I can't be of much help.

thanks, Brinn. i worked out the cookie thing after i posted, it was Opera not Privoxy i'll have another look at the files, it's just that i'm never really convined any of the changes i make are working.

the two things i'd really like to know are -
1, how to bypass a site, which file, and where in the file?

2, how to accept all cookies from a site?

if anyone knows please let me know.

Say you have accounts on some sites that you visit regularly, and you don't want to have to log in manually each time. So you'd like to allow persistent cookies for these sites. The allow-all-cookies alias defined above does exactly that, i.e. it disables crunching of cookies in any direction, and the processing of cookies to make them only temporary.

{ allow-all-cookies }
sourceforge.net
sunsolve.sun.com
.slashdot.org
.yahoo.com
.msdn.microsoft.com
.redhat.com

This would be added to the user.action file.

It's hard for me to know what works and what doesn't sometimes. I use Proxomitron mainly and although it keeps lists as separate txt files, it's even more confusing than Privoxy.

they are abit complicated. i use Proxomitron too and love it, but i have pretty much stopped using Windows for Ubuntu and if i want to run Proxomitron i'd have to install Wine. i'll do it when i get a new HDD with more space.

I don't know if you've seen this but there's a new app called Proximodo that's still in the early stages of development and is aiming to be the heir to Proxomitron eventually. I haven't tried it yet because I don't know if I would make a good beta tester. I'm keeping an eye on it, though.

yeah, i thought that was what i was using until recently i got them abit muddled up. it says they'll be releasing a Linux version too

i think Privoxy has been fixed now, it hasn't logged me out from here for hours even while i was at another site for a long time.

can you think of a reason to not change the user agent to windows? some sites don't work if they see you use Linux e.g. http://www.gap.com/ i can only really think of downloads atm but that's not really a problem.

Not really. If it causes problems, just change it back.

I wish I had a second computer. All of a sudden, I have this urge to get my feet wet with Linux.

Linux uses a very small amount of disc space. it can easily be installed on 6GBs probably even 5, but you'd soon be pushed for space. i installed on 7GB and i've installed alot of stuff and am only now starting to run out of space.

since i did the install i haven't used XP once, the only reason i'm keeping it is because the support for my modem isn't very good and i have to use afew scripts to get my modem going then some more to stop it before i turn the computer off. so i could get into trouble if i don't have a backup OS. also, all the things i've learned would be wasted if i gave up with windows.

i really love Ubuntu, it's so good.

i don't suppose you know how to change user agent? i did try very quickly the other day, but i don't think it worked. i only did a search for user agent on afew of the files though, and didn't spend much time on it.

all the other problems i had with Privoxy have been fixed now, thanks for the help

I've never fiddled with user_agent header myself but my proxo filter does do this. Download the proxo filter in this thread:

http://kyeu.info/proxo/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8

There's a file in this zip that contains a list of user_agents you can use.

I'm really thinking about it now.

thanks for the link.

i suppose you could try a live cd but they don't have as much stuff as the installs, and are slower. they're good because they'll let you know if the distro can detect your hardware.
