After testing without liking the product I always come back to either Norton or PCAV, depending on if I need a free solution or not.

I uninstalled ESET Smart Security 5 Beta and decided to give my other all time favourite antivirus company's product a try: Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 Beta.

My opinion about KIS 2012 Beta (in comparison to KIS 2011):
  • greatly reduced the performance impact on my pc, which was my biggest complaint about KIS 2011;
  • I really love the new interface, it is the best I have ever seen for a security application. Way better than BitDefender's new interface in the 2012 version, which I absolutely dislike, but others like it somehow;
  • improved general user experience (for example faster installing, faster initial signature update).
  • However, full scans are still desperately slow for some reason (just like I experienced with KIS 2011);
  • a patheticly slow Internet Explorer 9 extension: IEVkbdBHO;
  • Kaspersky seriously should reintroduce the custom installation so can opt from bloat (Virtual Keyboard, Anti-Banner, Parental Control).
EDIT: I guess this won't survive long, stuck for minutes at scanning notepad.exe, stuck for minutes at scanning regedit.exe; 9 hours scanning time remaining. Just like I experienced with KIS 2011. A shame for a release which is great apart from this.

Great setup IMO.

Interesting to notice that some of the real top security programs are "one man show"!

- Sandboxie: Tzuk
- DefenseWall: Ilya Rabinovich
- Shadow Defender: Tony

Hello, You said you've uninstalled eset 5 beta but you didn't give your thoughts like you did for kaspersky 2012. You tried the both and i'm interested of your opinion about those 2; they are my favourite too

Thanks

I am interested in adding ClearCloudDNS. Does it slow down your browser at all?

Keepin it simple today. Default-deny/sandbox setup.

Standard User Account + EMET + UAC + Parental Controls + Sandboxie FREE
  • Only Sandboxie allowed to RUN via Parental Controls.
  • Sandboxie shortcuts acts as a launcher for any apps I want to run that is not allowed in Parental Controls.

thus no program can run un-sandboxed in my standard user account. pretty tight and light, just boring.
suggestions?

thanks but I think I missed something as I still have to run as admin those Sandboxie shortcuts.

maybe I should make UAC silent or remove it completely... or I don't know... my brain is dead, going to sleep. bye.

On my system I actually didn't notice any difference in performance between ESET 4.2 and 5 Beta, both are among the lightest security applications. The interface and user experience/usability improved. I can't say how much/whether protection has improved, such most improvements are really under the bonnet: more cloudcomputing, revamped Internet protection (new module), HIPS which I have never seen doing anything in automatic mode (HIPS is heavily dependant on how much it will evolve over time). Personally I don't perceive any added value from the parental controls, I would love an option to not install that module (disintegrating works quite good though). I didn't experience major problems while using (however upgrading from 4.2 failed (Web access protection)), only I had a bunch of weird firewall messages (is a thread about in the ESET beta forum).
My conclusion is: the user experience/usability is great, a little improved over the already good 4.2. And time will tell how much the protection has improved.

KIS 2012 beta: see previous post
The scans are are really slow on some dll's and exe's in the Windows folders (regedit.exe and notepad.exe most notably) but after it has done those scanning suddenly speeds up again. However it is still too slow (1 hour and 2 minutes for a full scan where as ESET does that in 36 minutes and avast! even faster). That has to improve.
I am happy with the performance improvement over version 2011, which is great and really was necessary. In future updates they should futher improve the performance.
Protection has always been great and recent test show KIS is still top-notch.
But to make me buy KIS (next to the ESET license I own) they really have to reintroduce the custom installation. It just contains too much bloatware I don't want.

If they reintroduce the custom installation and further improve the performance (and ofcourse continously keep improving protection) I will buy a license again. After years of hating KIS, this is a great release with a lot of potential.
