Yeah, not much of a fan myself. If it was created by anyone other than Microsoft, it wouldn't be used by nearly as many people.

To be honest with Microsoft Security Essentials it also makes difference whether you use 32-bit or 64-bit. At 64-bit the memory usage for all three processes are 90MB, which is higher than the 32-bit product. Also how long is full scan taking for you?

In the first days I was a fan of Microsoft Security Essentials, but it has hardly improved since, my opinion:

Advantages:
* user friendliness: ease of use and graphical user interface
* removal of threats, slow but very thorough
* it is Microsoft software, blends in perfectly into Windows 7
* great detection on a couple of types of threats

Disadvantages:
* heavy on RAM, CPU and disk
* extremely slow Full Scan
* update is quite sloppy
* poor detection on a couple of types of threats

Overall verdict: it still has potential, but quite some work has to be done to make it good. In general one could easily say that all the other major freebies, AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2011, avast! 5 Free Antivirus, Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Antivirus 10 and Panda Cloud Antivirus Free Edition 1.4 are all a lot better.

I noticed this Vipre deal is still active for both the AV and Premium versions. Bellgamin posted in the AV area that he was looking for a discount deal on Vipre:

After quite some time with my old set-up including Avira Premium, now I replaced it with F-secure AV 2011. So far everything is nice and smooth (may be because I'm running Prevx without SO). But it's true that F-secure's I/O reads and wites are excessive. Otherwise feels really light, no significant slow down of boot time or file operations. I'm really glad they took off the 2011 AV only version the Web HTTP scanner - an utterly useless, clumsy peace of misunderstanding. Sorry for my harshness. I hear though the exploit shield in the IS version is pretty effective.

Why would one choose not to install all the other shields, but to install the Behavioral Shield? It really won't detect a thing, where in contrary the Web and Network Shields will.
