Default Get Windows OneCare Live Beta

Get Windows OneCare Live Beta

Windows OneCare is a comprehensive and integrated PC health service that helps protect and maintain your computer with antivirus, firewall, PC maintenance, and file backup and restore functionality.
This new service is in beta testing. We invite you to try it out and let us know what you think!

Read the installation requirements and release notes.

What is a beta?

A beta is a pre-release version of a Microsoft product that we've opened up to public testing. In this case, we're asking regular folks like you to install and try out the different features of Windows OneCare. Take it for a test drive! And if you want, tell us what you like and don't like. Your feedback will help us make Windows OneCare the best possible when we bring it to market.

Installation requirements for Windows OneCare Beta
To ensure that your Windows OneCare installation runs smoothly...

Step 1.

Make sure that your computer meets the system requirements for Windows OneCare
Check your computer for the following minimum requirements for successful installation. If you are unsure how to find this information, you can start the installation process and Windows OneCare will check your system automatically during setup. To install Windows OneCare, your computer must be connected to the Internet.

Windows® XP (Home Edition, Professional, Media Center Edition, or Tablet PC Edition) with Service Pack 2 (SP2)
Internet Explorer 6 for Windows XP SP2 (IE 6.0.2900.2180)
PC with 300 MHz or higher CPU clock speed
256 MB of RAM
550 MB of available hard disk space (on system partition)
56 kbps or faster Internet connection (broadband recommended)
Readable/writeable CD or DVD drive (CD-RW or DVD-RW, aka "CD or DVD burner"), or external hard drive. (Necessary for Backup and Restore functionality, but not required for installing Windows OneCare.)

Step 2. Uninstall other antivirus and firewall programs
This step is very important no matter what brand of protection software you use, because installing one antivirus or firewall program over another on the same computer could potentially lock up the computer.

Windows OneCare might not run, or it might slow the performance of your computer, if you install it when other antivirus or firewall programs are also installed on your computer. During Setup, Windows OneCare checks for the some common antivirus and firewall programs that are known to conflict with Windows OneCare and provides means for you to uninstall them.

Antivirus and firewall programs known to conflict with Windows OneCare:

Symantec Norton Internet Security 2005
Symantec Norton Antivirus 2005
Symantec Norton SystemWorks 2005
McAfee Internet Security Suite 2005
McAfee VirusScan 8.0/2004
Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2005
During Setup, Windows OneCare checks for the programs listed above and will notify you to uninstall any that are found. To avoid any potential problems, however, Windows OneCare recommends that you uninstall any other antivirus and firewall software (except for Windows Firewall, which is part of the Windows XP operating system and cannot be uninstalled) before beginning Windows OneCare installation.

Notes:

To avoid putting your computer at risk, do not remove pre-existing antivirus or firewall software until you are ready to install Windows OneCare.
You do not need to uninstall Windows Firewall, which is a component of the Windows operating system and cannot be removed. It does not conflict with Windows OneCare; in fact, Windows Firewall provides basic firewall protection while you are removing the old software and installing Windows OneCare.

At this time, participation in the Windows OneCare Live beta is open to U.S. residents only.
