Hello,
I am having to reformat my PC for a 2nd time and I am wondering if anyone knows if there is a limit to how many times you can activate Windows XP on ONE computer. I have only one computer and I have only one Windows XP CD that I bought so just wondering if anyone knows how many times you can activate Windows XP if your just reformatting the drive and of course need to install it back on the drive. Thanks! ~Brian ![]() |

When I was useing XP Pro I must have reformated a dozen times. The deciding factor as to how many times is dictaded by hardware changes to your computer. if it has not changed it shouldn't be a problem.

I have formatted my hard disk at least 100 times in the past 2 years (I use WinXP Home), and Activation was just fine every time, though sometimes the online activation would not work - I had to call Microsoft to get it activated.

"Activation and Product Licensing Policies
How many installations can be made with one product license? Has this changed with the introduction of Product Activation? ... Windows XP may be installed on one PC. There are no secondary use rights (e.g. no "laptop clause") in the Windows XP EULA. The aforementioned licensing terms have not been changed due to Product Activation. Some special licensing programs (such as the Microsoft Developer Network) provide additional licensing terms. Please check your specific license agreement or EULA for specifics. Re-installation and re-activation on the same PC can be done an unlimited number of times. ..." Product Activation Facts Regards, CrazyM

Like i said Brian2005 if you have not made any major hardware changes it should go just fine
if you have made some major hardware changes you might have to contact microsoft but not for just a "normal" reformat.
