Problem with Mint 13

The other day after I restored a factory image of Vista on my Mom's laptop, I installed Mint 13 KDE in a dual-boot. At first things seemed fine, but today the Internet wouldn't work. It can see the connection, but won't authorize or something. Also whenever she logs in, some Daemon Wallet thing pops up and asks for a password. I think that may have something to do with the Internet connection but I'm not positive.

It's not helping me make the case that she could use Linux instead of Vista

Also, I tried to install Google Chrome, and even though it downloaded a Linux version, the package refused to run or something.

Hmm. How'd you install the image? This sounds like some sort of permissions issue.

I just booted from it on a USB drive, and installed. I had 2 partitions; swap and root.

Since it's a new install its possible your Mom is entering the wrong password.

The Daemon wallet is KDE Wallet Manager which is the KDE password manager http://utils.kde.org/projects/kwalletmanager/. First check there are no entries in KDE Wallet (delete if there are) then do as JConLine suggests and double check that the wireless password is correct.

You mention you booted from a USB, did you connect it during the live session? Try the live session again and see if you can connect. If this does work you could re-install and try ticking the "install updates" at the same time to see if it makes a difference. Or try a wired connection and then install all the updates and then retry wireless.

Personally I always find KDE a little quirky and buggy on my machines, why not try the Cinnamon or Mate edition. I'm running Cinnamon and find it very stable.

Regarding Chrome, was it the right file? i.e. was it a deb or rpm /32 bit or 64 bit? The chrome download page should default to the right one but it might not have.

A quick Google search says that it's the network manager that is loading the Daemon Wallet.

So does the original Mint not use this? How would I go about deleting this Linux and installing GNOME Mint without screwing up the Vista installation and bootloader?

I had chosen KDE because I like the Plasma look, and it seemed most like Windows.

Nevermind. I just booted from the live MATE Mint and with Gparted formatted the Mint KDE partition, then installed MATE Mint in its place. Rebooted and all is good. Now I'm going to download E17 to make it look nicer.

I'm glad you got it sorted out. Before trying E17 why not just make MATE look nicer by changing themes or installing them from gnome-look.org. I tried E17 on Bodhi Linux but didn't like it very much but each to their own.

^Agreed. Make some simple/gentle changes like with big(ger) Sphere icons.
Very accurate symbols for different functions, not only beautiful.
And perhaps check also Adwaita Cupertino SL Unity theme as in a Mrk review here?

I had tried E17 before reading these. It seemed clunky to me. I reverted to MATE, then uninstalled E17. I then noticed I could get as good a look with GNOME themes but keep the functionality. I found some cool ones, but in the end decided the default look would be best for my Mom. And how is Unity? It looks futuristic but I'd read bad things about it.

all are good cinnamon, unity, mate, xfce kde.......etc best what you like to use and non is 100% trouble free at some place you might find little learning or you feel other is better but overwall if you want ease of use try linux mint with cinnamon or mate what ever suits you and old like xp type you can try xubuntu (xfce)

Well I like light but I also like eye-candy, which is why I liked KDE.

i also liked KDE, a lot.

but performances are not the best on this 5 years old machine.

it takes 3-4 seconds for Nautilus to launch the first time.
a couple of seconds afterward.

i installed KDE 4.9 yesterday for a test.
that's even slower than 4.8.
on 4.9, it takes 6-7 seconds for Nautilus to launch.

and unfortunately, there is no file managers as good as DOpus or XYplorer in Linux.

back to Windows, unless i get a faster machine at some points...

I noticed something that may be a problem.

When shutting down, on the black screen before it shuts down, it says at the top, "Could not write bytes: broken pipe."

Also, is it true ext4 is so efficient it eliminates the need to defragment the hard drive?

don't worry about the "broken pipe".
i have the same message and Mint works fine.

for your second question: i'd say yes.
i don't think there are even defraggers for Linux.

You may want to try installing the low-fat-settings package (in your package manager).

the biggest beef i have about Mint KDE is this:

i have a music folder which has about 450 sub-folders (music albums)
all of these folders have a folder.jpg image so i can see the album cover art on the folder.

the problem is that Dolphin rebuilds the thumbnails every time i re-open my music folder.
which takes about 15-20 seconds.

unless someone here has an idea i will hit the KDE Dolphin forum in search of an answer.

Have you tried playing around with these settings in Configure Dolphin >Dolphin Preferences ?

yes i have.
but it did not do anything as far as this issue is concerned.
i also checked the settings in Gwenview image viewer which apparently handles the thumbnails system-wide in Mint KDE.

i think FFMpegThumbs only works on video files:

FFMpegThumbs is a video thumbnail generator for KDE file managers like Dolphin and Konqueror. It enables them to show preview images of video files using FFMpeg.

Another little problem with the themes. One theme I tried out had me install it with some commands in the Terminal. I want to delete it now, but the delete button is greyed out on the themes. How can I remove it?
