Default Russian internet blacklist law takes effect

Quote:
The Russian media regulator Roskomnadzor has started adding sites hosting illegal information to a universal ‘blacklist’, to be taken offline without a court order.

In accordance with the law passed this summer, Russian Internet or ‘runet’ has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards websites that are hosting information about drugs, self-harm and child pornography.

Civil rights activists have been protesting against the changes, claiming they restrict freedom of speech and would lead to further Internet censorship.

On the surface, it’s all about protecting Russian kids from internet pedophiles. In reality, the Kremlin’s new “Single Register” of banned websites, which goes into effect today, will wind up blocking all kinds of online political speech. And, thanks to the spread of new internet-monitoring technologies, the Register could well become a tool for spying on millions of Russians.

Well, this will be one country that mine won't stick its nose in in the interest of "freedom" for citizens. Not while they're at each others throats politically. More on-topic, how easy it is for measures like this to be enacted and to go unnoticed until it's already at the doorstep. What's more unfortunate is how easy it is to convince people it won't or can't happen in their own country.

That's why history repeats. No one ever learns from it.

agreed sadly

well theirs ways around that problem as we all know, so its all good.

What Russia is claiming they will block sounds all good and all but, as we all know the problem is that more then likely they will block more then that and it will just become a tool for the people with the most power to gain even more.

And if you ~ Snipped as per TOS ~ about it they can block your internet site

A recent Supreme Court decision increases pressure on Internet providers to block websites without direct state interference, lawyers said Friday.

The Supreme Court said in a ruling published earlier this month in Rossiiskaya Gazeta that Web providers risk losing their licenses if they fail to block access to sites with illegal content.

The court made it clear that it is unlawful not only to disseminate information restricted by federal law but also to provide access to such information
