Default Ubuntu + Cinnamon - A good idea? No. A great one.

I've got something super-cool for you: a short tutorial and awesome screenshot tour showing how to install Cinnamon desktop environment in Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin as a replacement for Unity, demonstrating its great usability and aesthetics, with some comparison to alternative solutions and workarounds like Ubuntu Classic, MATE, and Unity Launcher shifted to the bottom of the screen. Have fun.

Hello Mrk,

I had installed cinnamon before seeing this article and using the same ppa, but when I clicked on the icons in the green portion of the horizontal taskbar at the bottom nothing happens. So when I saw your post I decided to uninstall cinnamon then re-install it using your guide. However, when I click on an icon on the green part, nothing happens. Only when I select an icon using the gear symbol to the left of "Menu" I am successful.

Any idea?

Hello Mrk,

I found the problem: The panel Edit mode was on, that's why nothing happens. I had to click on the upward arrow to the left of NetworkManager icon located further to the right on the bottom panel, then use the slider to turn off the Panel Edit mode.

Cheers!

Quick question guys, why use that unofficial ppa?

Why not just go straight for packages.linuxmint.com either in sources.list? From there one could either comment it out after the install or set that repo to only provide Cinnamon from apt's preferences. Or if that one cinnamon package is all that's needed (did it pull in libmuffin & all the extras?) just grab it/them from Mint's website and dpkg install.

Just wondering.

Hello Mrk,

Is this the same as "Adwaita Cupertino L" as shown in webupd8.org and gnomelook.org? A Google search shows Adwaita Cupertino on these websites.

Inside that archive, do you have four different themes?

Assumeably for the same reasons as installing Xfce on Ubuntu instead of using Xubuntu. Maybe you prefer the original distro or don't like the changes that specific distro makes.

Assumeably?

The analogy doesn't really fit. The Xfce I installed is by the Xubuntu team. Cinnamon is developed independently of Ubuntu and will have been tested primarily on Mint.

No need to wonder. The two are not mutually exclusively.
I'm gonna post a separate Mint review soon.
