Default Win 7 Backup like XP query

Hi all,
Another Win7 question.

When I was on XP, the machine automatically saved a backup ( to the C drive) before the install of new software.

Is there any way to force Win 7 to do this? I had a look at the options but it only gave me the option to backup to an external source.

I already have a system restore solution but curious if there is any way to do the above.

Thanks in advance

It doesn't currently appear possible based on the hits I've read. Perhaps as a cli option? Maybe, just maybe you could get away with creating a vhd on the target drive? Who knows, it "might" (sevenforums) depend on which "user" the backup service runs as? I don't know the defaults.
