Not sure if I understand you correct, Mack.
But if you have installed NVIDIA-Linux-*-*.run before, then all you need to do is run it again with the option kernel-module only:
# NVIDIA-Linux-*-*.run --kernel-module-only (or # NVIDIA-Linux-*-*.run -K)

If you want to update the entire driver:
# NVIDIA-Linux-*-*.run --update

And you are not interested in DKMS?

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DKMS

# NVIDIA-Linux-*-*.run --dkms:

Quote:
nvidia-installer can optionally register the NVIDIA kernel
module sources, if installed, with DKMS, then build and
install a kernel module using the DKMS-registered sources.
This will allow the DKMS infrastructure to automatically
build a new kernel module when changing kernels. During
installation, if DKMS is detected, nvidia-installer will
ask the user if they wish to register the module with DKMS;
the default response is 'no'. Use this option to make the
default response 'yes'. This is useful with the
'--no-questions' or '--silent' options, which assume the
default values for all questions.

nvidia drivers usually take out bugs and potential security threats as well, I have never seen them sitting heavy even on my laptop but now unless I need a gaming rig, I am quite satisfied with the new generation Sandy Bridge video performance. Major codecs get h/w acceleration via VLC so HDMI is a breeze.
