I decided to check for myself and downloaded the current free version of Avira. The ask.com toolbar is still there in the installer but the webcat.dat files are no longer present and the web guard feature no longer seems to guard against malicious sites. It seems this feature was changed with the 8 August update. According to a post in their forum, the malicious site web protection is now handled by the toolbar rather than by webcat.dat files. However other posts call that claim into question.

So the statement on Wikipedia that the toolbar is no longer bundled does not seem to be accurate.

I also agree with the poster who said the free version is slowing down boot time. It takes several additional seconds between the icon loading in the system tray and the umbrella actually opening.

Well I think the most effective free av right now is Roboscan Internet Security. Since the Roboscan firewall component is off by default, it is ootb only an av.

Avira still has one of the highest detection rate in the business.

It is the free version has that little irritating bits; one by one they might not be much, but taken together I can see how they can be off-putting.

The paid versions have few if any of these issues.

The firewall is crap anyway according to a review I've seen.

Nah, in my testing Avira can wipe Robo clean with its detection capability.

I'm sure nobody wants to hear it, but the Mac version of Avira Free isn't bad at all.
