Default Apple removes Java from all OS X Web browsers

Quote:
by Dan Goodin

Apple has further distanced itself from Oracle's Java software framework with a Mac update released on Wednesday that removes a Java plugin from all Mac-compatible Web browsers.

Users who install the update will find a browser placeholder when they encounter Web-based content that requires Java, according to Sophos security researcher Paul Ducklin. "If you want to run Java applets in your browser on Mac OS X, you need to install the official Oracle Java runtime on the system to do that," another blogger on ghacks.net wrote. "Yes, that runs them in parallel with Apple's version for Java. For users that need both, it means to take care of two versions of Java on the system from that moment on."

They should have never ever have pre-installed the plugin in the first place. Really any instance in which you're forced to use Java applets is the result of software and website developers being lazy in my own opinion. After what we've seen in just the past couple of months not even counting previous issues, Java should be discarded and left behind.

Apple Kills Java In Macs' Browsers After A Slew Of Security Vulnerabilities
Quote:
Apple has a way of aggressively simplifying life for its users. This time, it’s vastly cutting down on their Java habit.

After a string of security vulnerabilities in Oracle’s ubiquitous program, Apple’s latest Java update released on Tuesday strips the program out of users’ browsers on Mac OSX. Apple’s tersley worded advisory on the decision explains that if users need Java to run content on a web page, they’ll be prompted to download the plug-in. In addition to nixing the Java applet in browsers, Apple’s update also fixes 20 bugs in Oracle's program.

I totally agree I have OS X latest 10.8.2 MT Lion - safari, I had to uncheck stinky Java. Java will never see the light of day on any of my windows machines.

If you're referring to browsers, I don't believe any of them have been dumb enough to include the plugin for years now. Now if we can just get the alternative office software vendors like OO and Libre to stop being lazy and get moving with their word about replacing Java for certain functions, we'll be closer to getting the thing buried in the ground where it belongs.

While I don't use a Mac or any of it's software, I have been Java free on my W7 machine for over 2 years and can count on one hand the number of times I couldn't view/use a website, and when it did happen, I just moved on. At work I unfortunately need it, but never at home.
