I'm not sure about your specific error, but have you tried changing the site you're updating from? Next to the 'Search for Updates' button is a dropdown box that enables you to change mirror sites - this sometimes works for update problems (especially if you have a 'bad checksum' problem).

My problem seems to be with a lot of programs. They seem to work other than when I try to update them. Even firefox does not work. It shows I have a connection error. Internet explorer works fine. Most of the programs indicate they are not connecting to the internet but this is not the case because IE works fine and also my email is working fine.

Have you tried temporarily disabling your FW (or any other prog that controls access) and then updating again?

Sometimes security progs can interfere with updates - KAV6 can do this if you fail to configure it correctly.

This doesn't sound like a SpyBot problem though.
