Is there some NASCAR of the computing world I've missed? The obsession with speed in browsers and operating systems forces me to believe there is some multi-million dollar race track out there filled to the brim with geeks every weekend

There are some competitions of that kind. It's a bit weird, but I find it very healthy to tech overall.

actually, i did not need any benchmarks to tell me Win 8 is faster than W7.

it's noticeable in daily use.

I didn't really notice it when I used it for a few weeks or so, but I will take your word for it. Mostly because I noticed a huge difference between Vista and 7, like night and day, 7 was much better for me, even though many others can't see the difference...

I won't be upgrading to 8 mostly because I can't get past Metro and the rest of the UI. That was the deal killer for me... However, when the time comes to buy a new machine, I'll probably learn to live with whatever it comes with...

it's probably easier to notice on older machines like mine, a 5 years old machine.

on a newer machine, maybe not as much.

Yeah, could be... my laptop is about 3 years old, but it does pretty well. I think the same applies to linux and Xfce... some say you can really see what a difference it makes on older hardware....

When I first tried 8 on my pc it was noticeably slower than 7, but I didn't give up trying. A few days later I booted 8 and... it was flying

To confirm this I installed 8 in a VM on a USB 2.0 external drive and only 1GB ram and 1 cpu core, during setup it was very slow, even the mouse lagged behind, on first startup I noticed it does some kind of optimization, then on the next one it became so fast I couldn't believe it.

It's definitely a great OS for older laptops on which 7 feels a little heavy. Or if I were to get a new pc I would definitely use 8. atm though I'm satisfied with 7 and continue to use it.

I didn't like Metro either so I installed Classic Shell but wasn't satisfied with it, then installed StartIsBack and it makes a lot of difference, it feels like the real thing.

Nope and I see no reason to. I am not so impatient I need my computer to boot faster. I also think Metro is a disaster and needlessly makes simple tasks more complex.

Using Windows 8 Pro in Virtualbox - but still using Windows 7 as main OS! Best of both worlds!

With the beta expiring next week I decided to finally take the plunge and wipe my disk. Now officially on Windows 8, and extremely glad I don't have to deal with the beta bugs anymore, and I can use apps now!

What! - which ones? I just installed Timezone (a freebie) - can't see anything bad yet.

Cheers!

My thoughts as well, or maybe Windows 10 or 11.

Really hope MS does not continue down this path. If so, it may force me to go to Linux full time.

I will stick with Win 7 x64 till I need a new system but I do use both Win 8 Pro x86 & x64 in VM's for testing purposes.
