How can it be placebo effect considering on all my machines I have timed bootup before/after and app start before/after and have seen the difference? I have had more issues with security software preventing my machine from booting them registry cleaning.
I know I am not misguided I always look over what it wants to repair before I install it. Looking over previous logs most of the junk in the registry are old keys from uninstalled programs that were never cleansed out. Iolo/TuneUP have been around for quite some time. If registry cleaners are that nasty why do people continue to buy them and why don't we have more reports on people getting damage of them. In Maximum PCs November issues they tested some system cleanup utilities. Iolo one of the tested utilities did in their cases help improve the boot time app start times. Sadly TuneUp Utilities was not tested so I can not comment on it.

[quote=Ibrad]If registry cleaners are that nasty why do people continue to buy them and why don't we have more reports on people getting damage of them./QUOTE]
People buy them becuase the publishers make rediculous claims about how cleaning the registry will fix problrms and increased speed. Most registry cleaners have a heavily cripled trial version that will either clean none or very of the errors found. So, people run a scan and find hundreds (or even thousands) of registry errors. Becuase they've been told how serious registry errors are they are scared into buying the product so they can fix the errors. It's not till they have parted with thier money that they find out that cleaning the registry is mostly a waste of time. Even if cleaning the registry doesn't fix any errors or crashes or improve performance, there is the perceived benefit of getting rid of all these errrors. So while some people will feel cheated by paying money for a product which does not live up to the publishers claims, other will be happy to have gotten rid of the registry errors - even though thier computer is running no better. In terms of damage, while almost all registry cleaners will remove valid registry keys if all the found errors are deleted, these days usually the damage is not critical. Unlike years ago when some registry cleaners could render a computer unbootable - something I have experienced several times.
