The best AV - free or otherwise

Nice prog, but overpromoted by some powerusers I think. NOD have a fair detetction rate, scans quick also. But as with most of the other AV's the speed is limited when you turn on real time-protection

Well, NOD32's Realtime Scanner WAS very slow on MY Pc.
And that's MY experience - so stop call it "Incorrect statement" - I think you should balance your own opinion a bit.

I'll temper it this way. I have NOD and F-Prot on my machine. At times I will swap the realtime scanners. I always go back to NOD. It seems to have a noticeable edge, in my experience.

Hum, zplastic what are your qualifications? Against what did you test all these, and on what type of machine? What O/S were you using? Are you telling us that you found none of the free ones to be worth mention? In other words give us much more information than what appears to be just your opinion. If you read the post here at Wilder's, over a period of time you will see many different opinions, it is the ones that have been substantiated that seem to be believed the most.

It failed to detect stuff even norton could find. The program itself was badly behaved, and the interface was very poor and counter-intuitive. The fact that the use of english wasn't upto the mark also meant that I won't be using it (I believe professionalism should be self evident in all facets)

command antivirus is a well behaved antivirus program with good detection rates and is easy to set up and use.

I was talking about ZLOCK AV which had bneen mentioned earlier in the thread. Sorry for the confusion.
NOTICE: I haven't tried command AV yet, and I do not intend to do that soon.

Kaspersky Personal 5.0
Very good detection, probably the best of them all. Updates very often. Best AV prog to detect trojans too. Scans all compressed formats (zip, rar etc.)= very good. But KAV slows down my PC to unacceptable level. Main problem is the real time-protection. If I turned this off, it was ok. But then you don't have so much use of it's protection...

The following is a comment based my experience:

I still have a Win98SE machine (no cat calls or egg-throwing, please ). I had AVP 3.5 as my AV since it is very light on resources, compatible with Win98SE and did not slow my system down when using the RTM. When I took a leap of faith and installed KAV 5.0, I was pleasantly surprised that there was no noticeable difference in speed, even with the RTM running...I've stuck with it since.
