Not sure if I understand you correct, Mack.
But if you have installed NVIDIA-Linux-*-*.run before, then all you need to do is run it again with the option kernel-module only: # NVIDIA-Linux-*-*.run --kernel-module-only (or # NVIDIA-Linux-*-*.run -K) If you want to update the entire driver: # NVIDIA-Linux-*-*.run --update |

Whats wrong with adding x-swat ppa? It does the job well.

Major codecs get h/w acceleration via VLC so HDMI is a breeze.
