just an update Brian,

i followed the instructions in one of your post in this thread:

i restored the Ubuntu image using "0" instead of Auto and everything works fine.

i know this is a very specialized topic but hopefully this can help somebody else.

many thanks again Brian for taking the time to solve this situation.
i certainly would not have been able to figure this out by myself.

Excellent!

Tom Pfeifer provided the information on the excess sectors used by Grub2. He's in the process of determining whether this applies to other Linux distros.
