Default Paragon 12 backup and restore free version with Ubuntu 12.04

Friends I have a perplexiing issue, when I restored my Ubuntu 12.04 image from external hard drive it finished successfully. When I boot into Ubuntu (this is the only OS on the machine) No USB hard drives or USB flash drives are recognized. Before I did the backup everthing worked fine. I would plub in any USB storage device and a window would pop up and allow me to look at the contents in ubuntu. The drives work fine on my other computer with win 7. I am using the option to boot from USB flash drive to run the backup/resotre program. Dell D610
Thakns for any advise,
Peace, Josea
ALSO Disk utility no longer launches; and Both issues happen if I boot from the live CD for 12.04, I have also set my BIOS to defaults. there is a setting for USB emulation in BIOS, I have tried both options but no change!
