About the idea of the govt. regulating the internet...
I don't like that idea at all!
It's another theory or idea that I would categorize as extreme!

Internet security/safety is our responsibility as individual internet users.

I remember waaay back in the old days [phew, didn't know I had any grey cells left to remember back that far] when my parents and others had to pay a Broadcast License [for "Wireless" - Radio and Television].

Had to go to the Post Office [controlled by the government at that stage] and pay an yearly fee to have the "privilege" of listening to the radio or watching TV.

What a bloody giant step backwards for mankind, if an Internet fee is introduced.

Absolutely no way it could be policed, hell look at the other "crimes" that need to be addressed first. Talk about a stupid idea.

Regulation wouldn't be taken well at all.. probably make things worse than they are now An interesting subject though, I didn't realise in making the current top threats page for TDS that I-Worm.Klez had been the top virus for quite so long.. 14 months ! Thats an epidemic if ever I saw one

If you can't go online without a license, the government could just revoke the license of anyone who disagrees with it.

And how would this be enforced? A monitor on the computer perhaps? And which government should enforce it and issue the license? There are 200+ (more or less) independent nation-states. Or perhaps the UN should do it?

Mike - The answer to your question about how it would be enforced is obvious - People who had "passed" the test would be issued a (time-limited, revocable) unique identifier "super-cookie", without which, their ISP's would be required to deny them Internet access.

It'd be Big Brothers dream-come-true - absolute identification, without which you would have no Internet access.

Government wants to know something about your Internet activities? They simply key in your identifier and your ISP promptly produces every keystroke you've made, every site you've visited, how long you were there, every link you clicked while at each site, etc, for whatever target period they specify.

Poindexter would positively mess his britches over something this good. Pete
