Get the business version so I don't have to be spammed?

Not a viable solution.

How about Webroot just doesn't spam.

got a reply from the Support about this 'ad'......"The in-product messaging you are referring to is most likely attached to your keycode but its noting to worry about. It is designed to get messages to our beta testers. Being that that you were one of our Beta testers that would explain the presence of the messaging".......

Most reasonable people so far don't consider upselling related to the existing product in a spot at the bottom of that product that is made for that purpose to be spam. Spam is more of a case of sending things that consume otherwise-free resources to tell you about things unrelated to the thing you seek or have. If you use a custom email address for Webroot and then start immediately getting "Enhance your manliness!" ads in that email, that's spam. If you have a security product and are informed that there are extra options available to you specifically related to that security product in under 1/20th of the UI of that security product when you open that security product... that's not really spam.

It still stands: If they make more money from offering that stuff than they lose by you leaving, they will do it. That's how companies work. Heck, with auto-renewal after the year, there will always be the vocal 5% who hate it and scream bloody murder over it, but the cost to customers and the number of people who like the auto-renewal still outweighs the people who don't, so places still do auto-renewal, no matter how loudly some people scream about it.

But I think it's a moot point. One Webroot person made it clear that there are no ads going on for 8 and the only reason you are seeing an ad is because it was a 7.0 key. The other Webroot person said the ads are tied to the keycode, so that makes the first thing make sense too.

I'll draw the line at including third party advertising in their UI, but their own stuff is fine to me.

Agree.

Also that there are No Advertising Pop-ups of any kind.

I overlooked one important detail...I don't think you can actually upgrade or change the account without logging in. So if "Granny" doesn't have your admin password for MyWebroot, she can't accidentally purchase anything.

Okay, fantastic...but I still can't get over the question of why not try to make it enticing for people to get the most $$$ version upfront, rather than advertise to them later?

And yes I understand v8 currently has no ads, but I believe marketing has control over those messages so I am proposing a hypothetical "what if..."

What if the latest AV-C result (even tho it was technically Advanced+ for detection but people just scroll to the award part at the bottom) causes enough people to drop/not buy Webroot so they need to make more money?

I would personally donate to Joe directly via PayPal before I'd upgrade to something I didn't need.

Just don't give her a credit card.

What if something new and exciting comes out after the original purchase?

Let your opinion be known in a productive and constructive manner on their community forum.

The more-advanced users won't just scroll to the bottom. The less-advanced users won't read the report. Both the less-advanced and the wannabes who just look at the bottom can and should be properly-educated by the more-advanced.

Then you can probably ignore that part of the UI. I mean, how often do you click on the "Learn More" button right now?
