Dish Network launches nationwide satellite broadband service with ViaSat, Hughes, cal

Dish Network's long-gestating tie-up with ViaSat and Hughes has finally arrived under the name dishNET. Sounding like an implement you'd use to clean dirty dinner plates, the nationwide satellite broadband service launches from October 1st, targeting customers in rural areas that are underserved with fixed line gear. $40 a month gets you 5 Mbps down / 1Mbps up with a 10GB data cap, while subscribers can get a $10 discount if they pick up a TV package at the same time.

I have Dish network HD TV just be warned when it rains medium to heavy there is partial to complete signal lose and may remain that way until the weather lets up.Also when it snows heavy there is lose of signal or when snow builds up on the dish it can block signal sometimes.So unless I am wrong I would Imagine this being a problem for Internet connection.

Dont believe the sales pitch either that in short of a major storm or hurricane or tornado there will be no signal lose is total BS.

Dish does lose signal in heavy rainfalls. Even their up link has been victim to this. It generally doesn't last long.

For those with no broadband service at all, it is good to have this choice.

I agree ronjor and maybe some of the folks that are still in the dark ages of no high speed internet connection available may get the chance now to enjoy faster ISP speeds.

I have some personal experience with satellite broadband service. I won't mention the companies involved but I will say that I found it to be:
1) A heck-of-a-lot better than dial-up.
2) Generally "useable" for light surfing.
3) Generally NOT-useable for any file uploads.
4) Better in bad weather than I thought it would be.
