Quote:
by Johannes Ullrich

For a few years now, October is designated "National Cyber Security Awareness Month". The target audience of the awareness month effort is mostly consumers. This year's motto is "the Internet is a shared resource and securing it is our Shared Responsibility".

How You Can Get Involved in National Cyber Security Awareness Month

Editor’s Note: The following is a guest post from Michael Kaiser, Executive Director of the National Cyber Security Alliance.

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month. National Cyber Security Awareness Month is about everyone doing their part to make sure our online lives are kept safe and secure. The Internet is a resource we all share and securing it is our shared responsibility, which is our theme for the month.

Five-minute security: The elevator pitch

By Dominic Vogel

Over the past several months, since notable security professional Dave Aitel proclaimed that security awareness was a complete waste of time, much has been written both for and against his arguments. I am not going to bother to add to the litany of articles. Regardless of your opinion about security awareness as a risk mitigating control, all information security professionals should be capable of at least describing, at a high-level, the concept of security awareness. Picture this scenario: you are tasked with talking about security awareness with your business colleagues. One stipulation - you have only five minutes to deliver your message. So other than constructing a machine to slow down time, how would you attempt to effectively describe security awareness in 300 seconds? My approach: take out all the techno-babble and appeal to people’s common sense.

Microsoft's Free Security Tools - Summary

In July, we kicked off a blog series focused on "Microsoft's Free Security Tools." The series highlights free security tools that Microsoft provides to help make IT professionals' and developers' lives easier. A good tool can save a lot of work and time for those people responsible for developing and managing software. In the series we discuss many of the benefits each tool can provide and include step by step guidance on how to use each. Below is a summary of the tools covered in the series and a brief overview of each.

Cyber security awareness is about as useful as the DHS terrorist threat level color codes.

Not if done effectively. Most awareness training focuses on the technology. That's a mistake, it needs to focus on the user.

^^(And by the way, that's my answer to "how would you attempt to effectively describe security awareness in 300 seconds?")^^

A company dedicated to security awareness training, they've published some interesting data about how people learn

A class on how to deploy security awareness effectively

how to build a security awareness training program

Study finds 90 percent have no recent cybersecurity training

by Stephen Cobb

A new study finds that only 1 in 10 consumers have had any classes or training about protecting their computer and/or their personal information during the last 12 months. Indeed, a shocking 68 percent say they have never had any such training, ever. These and other findings, first revealed by ESET at the Virus Bulletin conference in Dallas, come just in time for National Cyber Security Awareness Month.
