Default Apple pulls out of 'EPEAT'

Quote:
While we all love our electronic devices, everyone knows that they contain a lot of hazardous waste in them. The idea for a standard that electronics manufacturers could use to signify their products are environmentally friendly was started in 2001 and the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) was released in 2006. EPEAT requires products meet criteria in eight environmental performance categories, one of which is the level of environmentally sensitive materials it contains.

The article title in full created some commotion and comments tell more than the piece itself.

San Francisco turns its back on Apple after green registry pull-out - Several other institutions are reconsidering future Mac purchases as well.

Quote:
The City of San Francisco will no longer be buying Macs following Apple's withdrawal of its products from the eco-friendly EPEAT registry. Officials from San Francisco's Department of Environment confirmed the move to the CIO Journal on Tuesday, saying that purchases of Apple's MacBooks, iMacs, Mac Pros, and other products would no longer be allowed among the city's 50 agencies because they "no longer qualify" for city funds.

Only one week after Apple pulled 39 of its products off the eco-friendly product registry EPEAT, the company has decided to hop back on board. In an open letter posted to Apple's website, Apple's Senior VP of Product Engineering Bob Mansfield explained Apple's stance on the environmental friendliness of its products and acknowledged the EPEAT pull-out as a "mistake."
