Ubuntu Barebones Installation?

I tried Ubuntu from a flash drive to check out Unity. I actually really liked Unity. It was very polished and easy to find things.

I was wondering though if there is a barebones Ubuntu with only necessary software so I could have a blank slate like after a fresh install of Windows.

I found Ubuntu Mini Remix and was wondering if that is the best I would get?

Is there a better Ubuntu-based distro that has or can have Unity that is still barebones?

Barebones - You can use the Ubuntu alternate CD, and select expert mode from the boot options, this will allow you to install a basic command line system.
It does assist in the configuration of setting up partitons, users and networking (and wireless).
From the terminal you could then just install lightdm, and unity, then you will have a very basic unity desktop.

Ok so I think I've found what I would need to get an Ubuntu installation with no programs installed.

I would be using the Ubuntu minimal CD:https://help.ubuntu.com/community/In...tion/MinimalCD

I would select to manually add packages. Those would be:

sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends ubuntu-desktop
" unity-greeter
" ubuntu-artwork
" network-manager-gnome
" lightdm
" software-center

Is this right? Does that include everything I would need?

EDIT: I just decided to reinstall Mint, and will probably be less adventurous with it.

Could be everything you need... check the dependencies as to what will get installed, I would check for things like bluetooth, printing, ACPI/APM support.
