Default "Analysis Failed" on VirusTotal

Today I received a malware executable by email. I uploaded it to VirusTotal... About 12 out of 33 antivirus engines labeled it as malware (mostly a fake AV or such) before I was met with a page claiming that the analysis had failed, with a button to go back to the main page.

What does this mean? How can a VirusTotal analysis "fail"?

Did you try running it through http://www.metascan-online.com as well?

No, but I did try running it through Jotti, and that didn't fail.
