What I do...

I use Windows Live Mesh to sync photos, videos and documents between my computer and my wife's. Then Live Mesh again to sync all that with two computers sitting in my office at work. That covers the off-site portion.

Then I use Macrium to image (differantial) both computers on a Linksys DNS-323 NAS daily.

It's all been working quite good so far.
