Exclamation Go Daddy-serviced Web sites taken down in apparent attack

Quote:
Web sites serviced by DNS and hosting provider Go Daddy were down today. A hacker using the "Anonymous Own3r" Twitter account claimed credit for the outage.

"Go Daddy is experiencing intermittent outages. This is impacting our site and some customer sites," company spokeswoman Elizabeth Driscoll told CNET in a phone interview. "We are working to restore all services and some are back online as we speak."

Following a day-long Domain Name Service server outage, web hosting provider GoDaddy is letting its competitor, VeriSign, host its DNS servers.

On Friday afternoon — about four hours after it was knocked offline — GoDaddy’s administrators made a change to the company’s DNS records, indicating that they were shifting control of the servers from GoDaddy to VeriSign.
Amidst Outage, GoDaddy Moves DNS to Competitor VeriSign by Robert McMillan.

"All services are restored and at no time was sensitive customer information, such as credit card data, passwords, names, addresses, ever compromised," Go Daddy spokeswoman Elizabeth Driscoll said in a phone interview just before 5 p.m. PT. She said the company does not know at this time exactly what caused the outage and she couldn't say exactly how many sites were affected.

"It did not affect all our customers, but I don't have an estimate on how many," she said. "We are working overnight on this and hope to have another update in the next 24 hours to put some specifics around what happened."

"The service outage was not caused by external influences," the company's interim CEO, Scott Wagner, said in a statement. "It was not a 'hack' and it was not a denial of service attack (DDoS)."
Go Daddy: Sorry about the outage. And no, it wasn't a hack by Paul Sloan.
