BlueCoat K9 Web Protection Administration

Hello,

Do you know this product ? http://www.k9webprotection.com/
It is a content filtering product, from the very well known company BlueCoat.

It is only running a k9filter.exe process (about 3.5 MB currently) launched as a service.

You only have to install it, reboot, and that's all. No need to configuration for basic usage (you can for sure add some exception, keywords, ...).

It's free.

I never heard about that product before installing it. Seems to work fine, but don't have too many feedback.

If some of you at wilders knows this product, I will be glad to hear their feedback.

 

After just one day of surf with K9, I can say I didn't have just one false positive. Perrfect job.
If I check the "disable access to pages not categorized", then sometimes I am prompted (often when trying to access to personal pages).
The categories are numerous,
There is an option to avoid search/images pages. This, plus the google safe search (activated through K9), and the only search you can do is the safe google one. Sounds good (poor other search engines, google will eat them).

And using the password, you can bypass the protection for a given site for 15 mn (just an example).

 

I use K9 on my daughters box. Been using it for about 6 mos now. I think it's a terrific "free" product. Just set it and forget it kinda app. In fact I checked it just yesterday and its been blocking all the sites its set up to block. Now all I need is a reliable keylogger and I'll be able to get some sleep at night

But seriously: this kid has a habit of getting caught up in all kinds of mischief*
(* putting it mildly)
Most of the poor decisions she makes are based on people she meets / chats with on the web. I've disabled AIM, so there's no more IM, but there are features in some of the sites she visits that enable her to hold conversations. Unfortunately, she doesn't learn from her mistakes, therefore I need to "head her off at the pass" so to speak. We've prevented her from meeting several strangers she's met online, but at the same time I'm -sure shes met twice as many as we've prevented.

I've tried ActualSpy, KGB, e-logger & elite keylogger. The box has Comodo FW, AntiVir AV, Spyware Terminator & CyberHawk. I can configure the security apps to exclude the keylogger but for some reason, not one of them works as advertised. ActualSpy is the most reliable but it crashes every few days.

It may sound strange that I have all this security, but at the same time want to run spyware. Truth be told, before this security arrangement she was infested w/ spyware & virus ridden (although running on a Limited Account) go figure

In the K9 logs I see all the spyware sites she attempts to visit (along w/ the porn of course) but I need to protect this kid before she gets herself killed.

ans: she needs it for school & work. When we did take it away, she went to the library, where IM's are permitted. Taking it away is no longer an option I will entertain.
