I would have mentioned the same three defraggers as WSFuser, but he was faster than me. So I can only tell you about my personal choice.

I bought PerfectDisk7 (PD7), because I'm also a FirstDefense-ISR user and with PD7, I don't need to remember to exclude the $ISR-thingy.

MST defrag.

The first proactive defragmentation proggie.
Install it and be done with it. You don't have to configure anything. It just works in the background without interrupting anything else and it works effectively.
Also a tiny footprint. Price is a steal (U$ 15,90).
Always a "fast" computer

Wunderbar !

Should that not be "PerfectDisk, PerfectDisk, ..., and PerfectDisk'?

I like PerfectDisk as well. It'll be interesting to see what they have planned for v8.

Me too. They told me it would be out this fall. I received and accepted a beta invite for v7 back when, but haven't seen anything on v8 yet. Maybe they prefer fresh bodies on each new version...

There was a mention of PD v8 in their last e-mail newsletter, but I forget what it said about new or improved features.

ALL the defrag programs use the same mSFT API.

They differ only in:

1. The efficiency of the coding.
2. The GUI.
3. The algorithm used to re-locate stuff.
4. The intrusiveness of the implementation.

I'd guess that the biggest change for v8 might be to claim support on Vista.

I also like the colorfull mosaic of PerfectDisk. The eye has its claims too.

Didn't know PD had a newsletter.
Never saw a link at their web site.

It's Raxco's newsletter for information on products and other news. I think there is an option to subscribe to it when purchasing, I can't remember, but I've only received one so far.

I can't find a link for it either, but I did find a "Mail List Removal" page:

I dug mine up:

The response to the integrated PerfectDisk Command Center, with its SQL Lite database, ease of navigation, flexible feature set, and use of WMI technology was very positive. With PerfectDisk 8, we will be raising the bar for corporate disk defragmentation..."
Not sure what that may mean for a single user. However, I have a server version with maintenance and 5 other licensed work stations, so we'll see.

for paid version O&O Defrag Pro v8.5, I think this low on system resources compared to others. The complete/Name process takes longtime the first time it was used, but after that, system operates great and the space and stealth defrag is faster. It really can organize and optimize the hard drives efficiently. Boot-time is also very fast. One thing also, it's made in Berlin Germany. So think about owning a mercedez benz technology used for your pc hard drives.

for free version... PowerDefragmenter GUI with contig.exe, or/and also Dirms. You'll felt like you're in star wars galaxy looking at the DOS screen, and it's great. And also add PageDefrag for boot-time defragmentation.
