I remember at the time my PG logs were disappearing after a reboot and DCS suggested disk corruption but I had just bought 2 new hard drives and a new PC. However the controller on the MB failed so I was getting random errors. I just remembered all this yesterday so in all fairness I posted it because it was just around the time I got my new MB that NOD failed and let in viruses but if the disk was corrupt then it wasn't even loading properly so wouldn't have caught those viruses.

I just want to ask what is better about NOD than many of the others because I might buy it tomorrow. Why would I choose NOD above Norton or McAfee for instance. Or even Kasperspy?

    Any comments?

Only opinion here my friend . KAV is good . If it will run with your setup . NOD is much lighter and very good . Kav heralds it's updates . So many a day . NOD has maybe one a day but , they rely on advanced heuristics to catch things BEFORE they are even added to a sig list . Some people like McAfee . I do not . Only an opinion . And Norton ? This will piss off alot of people but , that bloatware needs to be trashed . I have used it . Regardless of tests , things have gotten through that NOD caught . Go figure . NOD in the real world , will be a much better choice than Norton . No question . As for McAfee , I just did not care for it and it wanted to act up on occasion too . Since you use pcIP , NOD would be perfect . pcIP already catches many trojans and viruses that NOD is light and each will enhance each other . KAV is excellent . Too heavy for my liking . My system did not like it either . As I say . NOD is light , excellent at what it does , and enhances pcIP as pcIP will enhance it . ALL without a slowdown . Did that help at all ? Hope so

    Hi Hollywood,

You've got to be one of my favourite 'advisors'. I just luv that Pcinternet Patrol - works flawlessly.

One question. If I download the trial version of NOD do I have to uninstall it if I decide to buy it ( and install a commercial version) tomorrow or do I just enter the name and password?

I'll have a bit of a look at Kasperspy but I think I'll be getting NOD because I've just realised that I had disk controller problems at the time I posted about those viruses getting through so it may not have been NOD at all.

Also, THANKS VERY MUCH for having PcInternet Patrol included in your specs because it was only when I noticed that which made me look it up and I just love it. Hollywood, you know you're stuff and keep me informed about anything new with PIP.

Thank you for the kind words . very nice of you to say .
I think you need to download the commercial version but , just download it to the NOD folder you use now . No need to uninstall . And Dave . The new version will becalled Authensys . At least , that is the codename anyway . Hopefully out in the next month or so . It will still do what it does but , you will have the option of configuring certain programs . I talked to them about this for a long time . I would like to have a little more control so they have added that . I am very happy you like pcIP . I too , love it . And I am glad I ran into you again my friend . Keep me , and US , posted on how things are going along for you . I would really like to know . Take care

    Dave,

I can only speak for myself - overall balance of speed, lack of impact on speed of other applications, detection performance, and ability to get along with other software. Most discussion centers on item 3, I happen to use all four traits to make my choice. That about says it all....

I hope they give it a real cool name because it's a cool program. I'll probably get NOD tomorrow.

I would be buying it mainly for detection but also does it integrate into the Windows Security Center in XP SP2? It's a nuisance if it doesn't. I always have liked the idea of a http scanner - does it work ok or do you have it turned off. Does it affect browsing much? The http scanner in Bit Defender never affected my browsing so I hope that NOD doesn't interfere too much.

One question I have about NOD's IMON feature - I have programs listed in there by NOD itself. I need to check but I think they are set at 'Higher Compatibilty' (green) I know the configs show these should be set at 'Higher Efficiency' for the HTTP bit to work - if I set these to higher efficiency will it slow my browsing down as one of the listed programs is my browser o_O

I am more encouraged this morning when reading through these posts made last night.

    Thanks Holywood for this bit
I have set some configuratiosn but at least I know I can still be safe if I need to set them back until I am more familiar with the way NOD works.

I am really looking forward to a new version - I did note on install of the trial it was recommended I uninstall before installing a registered copy but on the website I thought it was only a a license code which need to be entered. I will have to make sure about this before the trial period is over. At least the new version will be released before the sub on my AVG (desktop PC) is due.

My notebook works well with NOD it is just me who gets a little confused especially configuring IMON as I really do not know if it will slow down my browser or if I would be at risk leaving the programs as NOD set them o_O My firewall update is listed there also plus Windows.....

Either way you shouldn't see a slow down, and unless you are having issues with a particular website everything should be on GREEN, unless it reverts to RED, again from what I have read of your surfing habits you will be fine with Nod32.

    Cheers :D

LOL, you have summed me up with my style of surfing ;) Everything was green last night and now I know to keep them this way without having to wonder. Thanks again Blackspear :)

I might be buying it tomorrow but I want to know which is the corect Eset site. There have been some phonies going around I heard.

Is this site legitimate and why is it different from the other site I found on Googleo_O?? - http://nod32.name/nod/

How is a quarantine situation handled where the file could be a false positive but according to this note is NOT ISOLATED. If it turns out to be a real threat in the meantime I'm exposed so what should I do?? But if it turns out to be a needed file and I delete it I'm up the creek aren't I? Ideally shouldn't quarantine isolate it so I can see if my PC is adversely affected? When is there going to be an internal submit file option within the program and why haven't they added this yet because it is included in most AV's nowadays?

NOTE: Quarantine ONLY copies the Virus or Trojan found so it can be sent to Eset for further analysis, it does NOT isolate the Virus or Trojan.

Worldcitizen, I just sent you a potentially important PM, DO NOT download KAV until you first read it, thanks.

Delete the file, if and I mean if it by great off-chance turns out to be a false positive, then Quarantine allows the file to be restored.

    Hope this helps...

    Cheers :D

    Thanks, Blackspear.

Have you noticed any overall system performance improvements while using the combination of nod32 and Prevx with the "2005" revision of the latter?

Given the recurring, exploitable buffer overflow problems in the decompression scanning modules (repacked executable unpackers; classic compressed archive file) of other, more "media celebrated" a-V products...

... how does eset manage to keep nod32 free from these glaring defects that seem to keep recurring (as in several times, over several years) in other a-V shops?

Does eset rely on any third-party code reviews?
