Hey Rita!! and anyone who is owned by a cat!! Some advice from some crazy cat ladies and gentlemen. _*How To Give A Cat A Pill*_ /Thanks to Juergen-Peter in Germany / How to give a cat a pill: 1) Pick cat up and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth pop pill into mouth and allow cat to close mouth and swallow. 2) Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process. 3) Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away. 4) Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count to ten. 5) Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse from garden. 6) Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously. 7) Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set to one side for gluing later. Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw. 9) Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, drink glass of water to take taste away. Apply Band-Aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap. 10) Retrieve cat from neighbor's shed. Get another pill. Place cat in cupboard and close door onto neck to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with elastic band. 11) Fetch screwdriver from garage and put cupboard door back on hinges. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus jab. Throw Tee-shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom. 12) Ring fire brigade to retrieve cat from tree across the road. Apologize to neighbor who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat. Take last pill from foil-wrap. 13) Tie cat's front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table, find heavy duty pruning gloves from shed. Push pill into mouth followed by large piece of fillet steak. Hold head vertically and pour 2 pints of water down throat to wash pill down. 14) Get spouse to drive you to the emergency room, sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and removes pill remnants from right eye. Call furniture shop on way home to order new table. 15) Arrange for SPCA to collect cat and ring local pet shop to see if they have any dogs. How to give a dog a pill: 1) Wrap it in bacon. LOL! My dog can eat the bacon and spit out the pills, he doesn't tear down the garage and neighbor' s fence - the cat's still got him in training! Marja
That was great Marja--and pretty true Maybe I should get a dog not as hard to handle and also save alot of money for furniture and dr.bills
Having never owned, or been owned by a cat, I have always found this method of administering medication of any kind......this method has been tried and tested by me on friends and neighbours cats and has never been known to fail...... #First, place a small piece of lead in the left, or right, ear of the cat..... Using a rifle or firearm of some description.....I guarantee the administration of any medication by the owner will be totally painless (to the owner) and a decidedly simple operation.....the cat will be very quiet and subdude during the administration......the reduction of stress on the animal and the owner is priceless....not to mention the enormous savings on Vets Bills and Public Liability Insurance, weighed against the cost of a very small outlay....and very little noise (If you use a Silencer) an extra benefit with regard to safeguarding your precious hearing, this also being humane in as much as the cat won't hear a thing......... Always on hand to help.... Cochise,
Signs Your Cat May Be Trying To Kill You Seems mighty chummy with the dog all of a sudden. You find a stash of "Feline of Fortune" magazines behind the couch. Cyanide pawprints all over the house. You wake up to find a bird's head in your bed. As the wind blows over the grassy knoll in downtown Dallas, you get a faint whiff of catnip. Droppings in litter box spell out "REDRUM." Catch him with a new mohawk looking in the mirror saying, "Mew looking at me? Mew looking at me?" Takes attentive notes every time "Itchy and Scratchy" are on. You find blueprints for a Rube Goldgerg device that starts with a mouse chased into a hole and ends with flaming oil dumped on your bed. Has taken a sudden interest in the wood chipper. Instead of dead birds, leaves cartons of Marlboros on your doorstep. Ball of yarn playfully tied into a hangman's noose. You find a piece of paper labelled "MY WIL" which says "LEEV AWL 2 KAT." Now sharpens claws on your car's brake lines.
Marja & ritaann, Those were sooo funny!!!http://img116.exs.cx/img116/1231/z7shysterical.gif ....................................... All though, Marja, you may have forgotten the part about just how easily your Vet demonstrates how easily the pill can be given to the cat..... http://www.diegotorres.com.ar/mensajeitor/foro/caritas/01-24.gif while yes, gently holding the mouth closed and gently stroking the neck. http://tcwozere.co.uk/smileys/ac39.gif
Our two cats (the washed ones remember) are funny. Each morning the male (Jack) will come into the kitchen while I am eating breakfast and talk to me. I will say "good morning Jack" Reply "meow". The female (Jill) will come in the kitchen look at me then at Jack, turn he back and start to walk away. I'll say good morning Jill, reply "meow". This occurs almost every day. They also at night wait for the spouse to start the dish washer, the minute they hear it, it's off to the bedroom and wait for the spouse to give them their cat treats. They have the mother-in-law fully trained, an watch her like a hawk. The male is totally in love with her and spend most of the day in her room. The female will pester her until she pets her. Thanks wildman
Hey Marja, Wifey and I are tolerated by four of the critters. One of them, Malcolm, has been getting two pills daily (yeah, right) for almost two years. I can relate to all of your first post and I have the scars to prove it. Anyone who does not have or dislikes cats would never understand the relationship. As far as Bettleboss's suggestion, what works at the Vets Office never works at home. It's really difficult to stroke a cat's throat w/bandaged fingers. Play on, big ed
Hey Marja Did you know that a click a day would help feed a sheltered animal.I learned this on here a long time ago, but couldnt find the post. the link is:http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/ARSreminderM I click every day.I hope it does help,I do it in case. That link you gave me about cats is wonderful--thanks
Some meds are available in liquid form as well as tablets. Liquids go down more easily, but probably taste worse. I've read about medications for animals being ‘compounded’ over the last few years. That means pharmacies mix drugs with palatable [stuff] for accurate dosing, & the dog or cat regards it as a treat. If a medicine needed long-term is made in injectable form to go under the skin, it's easiest for all concerned. I wouldn't have believed that before one of my cats was diagnosed with diabetes in Aug. of 2003. While she’s eating, I stroke her scruff a couple of times, gently but quickly & confidently pull up on her skin and give the injection. Then one more stroke afterwards for niceness AND to make sure her fur isn’t damp at the injection site. I often talk to her silly at those times of day. She seems to like the rituals and thrives on the special attention.
If your cat wont eat:--article Trying to tempt an anorexic cat to eat can be a frustrating experience, especially with an older cat, that might be easily stressed. Keep Him Well-Hydrated Dehydrated cats quickly lose their appetites. In fact, anorexic cats are more often than not dehydrated. Try flavoring his water with a small amount of sodium-free chicken broth, or even giving watered-down chicken broth a small teaspoon at a time. An automatic water dispenser may also tempt him to drink more water, which will also help guard against urinary tract problems. Warm up Canned Food Older cats' olifactory senses may deteriorate to the point that they can't smell their food. Try warming a small amount of canned food in a microwave oven. If it's too hot, add some more food right out of the can until it's a little warmer than room temperature. Then hold the dish right under his nose and let him get a good sniff. Alternatively, mix a small amount of hot water in the food and stir until it forms a sort of "gruel." Sometimes a senior cat's teeth and/or mouth may be sore, and they'd prefer a much softer food they can lick, rather than "chew." Offer Canned Pumpkin Plain canned pumpkin is loaded with vitamins, and more importantly, fiber. Most cats love the taste. Offer a small amount on the tip of a teaspoon, and if he likes it, give up to two teaspoons a day. Constipation goes along with anorexia, and the pumpkin will help. If your cat doesn't like it, you can always bake a pie with the remainder. Human Baby Food Plain meat is preferable, and make sure it doesn't contain onions. Try a number of flavors until you hit on one your cat likes. I also gave Shannon baby food squash and peas, and he readily ate both. Try a New Food Even if your cat has been on a premium quality diet, forget the labels for the time being, and look for "stinky" foods that might whet that ailing appetite. Some suggestions from the About Cats Forum members: Fancy Feast Seafood Filets Sardines Shrimp & Crab Gourmet Cat Food Fancy Feast Flaked Fish & Shrimp Feast Gourmet Cat Food Nutro Gourmet Classics Seafood and Tomato Bisque Nutro Gourmet Classics Savory Hunter's Stew with Duck Use "Add-Ons" to Enhance the Flavor Try Tuna Juice: Although tuna is not generally recommended in quanity for cats, try adding some tuna juice to his regular food to spice up the taste. Use the water from albacore tuna, rather than the pink varieties. Clam Juice Sardines, minced fine Kitty Kaviar: This is available from most larger pet food stores. It is made of dried bonito (tuna), and is irresistible to cats. Dried bonito flakes are also marketed under Seagate Pet Gold Dried Bonito Flakes. You can also purchase dried Bonito flakes in bulk at some health food stores, or oriental markets - much more economical. Tuna Dash: Dried powdered tuna, available at CatClaws.com. Jack Mackeral: Either chop up over his food or offer separately. The point is that "desperate times call for desperate means," and right now, your main consideration is not in what your cat is eating, so much as actually getting him to eat something. Any cat, particularly an older one, that stops eating and loses weight rapidly should be taken to the veterinarian immediately, because anorexia and weight loss can be symptoms of a number of other diseases. Discuss these suggestions with your veterinarian, since each cat has a different health history
Crikey!!......Rita......I wondered where I'd seen that diet regime before....Nobody told me it was for CATS.......I've been on it for years.....I can't even begin to tell you about the very odd side-effects it's had on me....I have an amazing collection of Fur-balls.....and my ability to always land on my feet no matter what I fall or jump off has always been a talking point at Parties......... Cochise,
Cochise Sounds like a good diet to me if it wasnt giving you furballs and your loss of balance at parties Guess you'll have to change it--and give this tasty diet up
