Exclamation What's the smartest configuration for mutli os?

I have purchased DDS 9 and want a heads-up: what's the smartest way to configure a single hard drive to run multiple os (eg. 2 copies of xp on one machine, win xp, win 2000 and DOS on a second machine).
Is multiple primary partitions better than one primary and logical drives?
Should DDS 9 be in a separate partition (say 100MB)?
Should DDS 9 be in the first partiton of the hard drive?

Awaiting feed back.
