WIN XP SP3, MS update and computer stuck at svchost at 100 % CPU

    Happening again with this Patch Tuesday. Seems like they don't really care about XP anymore.

    *While on the Windows Update site which remains in a loop, the Automatic Updates shield icon finally appeared after 20 minutes and allowed me to install the updates.

    It is indeed most annoying.

    Why do I even bother updating ?

    It's just weird. I believed that implementing the fixes for IE (7) would take care of the svchost issue. Last time, after doing exactly that I could use the update mechanism without a problem. So why is it an issue again ?

    Does M$ really think people will migrate to Windows 8 ?

    Newer is not better.

    Hmmm no positive reports from you guys!

    I will try to update today or tomorrow and will report back how it went after that I have logged in to the admin account. I have totally disabled Win Updates in the control panel so the OS shouldn't even start checking for them I think. But we'll see fingers crossed :doubt:

    Also, is there an update for IE 7 ?

    When will it end !

    Honestly, I don't think it's worth the effort or risk to depend on software that has to be updated continuously if you want to stay safe !

    Same thing for me. Windows Update stuck in a loop finding updates but the shield appears and I can download. At least I wont be bothered by this after April '14. :rolleyes:

    That worked.

    I downloaded and installed the IE patch manually. After that, I used Microsoft Update without issues.

    Honestly, I don't think it's worth the effort. But I just decided to update a clean image with the OS for future use.

    My wife ran into the same problem today on her XP system, and our son found that the major culprit was MS Update if auto-update was enabled. He found that if he changed MS Update to manual, the problem completely disappeared (immediately, judging by audible HD activity), and Process Explorer showing Idle back up to around 75-80%, with no instance of svchost using significant CPU usage.

    I had it on Manual before it started to happen for me around 3 months ago. So now they are permanently disabled.

    So 2 hours of trying this and that to get this to work is that really what we should need to spend updating the OS!!! :blink:

    First I went into the Admin account and everyhting was normal and the winupdate process didn't start to check for updates because they were permanently disabled since last month. So I thought let's try to go to the WU website and let it search, I shouldn't have done that, 10sec later an sv-chost.exe process used 99% cpu.

    So I closed the browser and in the control panel re-enabled the updates and set them to notify like before, and yes of course 99% cpu for 8Min before the yellow shield showed up in the tray, and when it did show up I chosed "install"........but nothing happened HELLO get started please! No no no, so I permanently disabled the WU in the control panel Again. And went to download them manually for the first time ever, and it worked just fine. So that's what I will need to do from now on, it's probably even faster doing it that way than sitting and waiting on the sv-chost to calm down and WU to get started with the updates wich it never does. :argh: :cautious: :ouch:

    I faced this issue on my old notebook. Updated IE 7 to version 8 and solved the problem. Now I see somebody mentioned it on previous side. To download updates from Microsoft you can use this programme. There some other alternatives but this one is by far simplest and most efficient. Used it to download "IE7 to IE8" update.

    Some XP users seem to have been hit by this problem at each monthly patch release starting with September 2013. But reports also go back many years.

    This issue comes about because Windows Update is heavily reliant on components of Internet Explorer. If these components are not up-to-date, later versions of Windows Update Agent (that's the engine that scans for and manages updates) may fail or exhibit very poor performance.

    It is NOT necessary to install a new version of Internet Explorer to resolve this issue. What is actually required is to install the latest cumulative security update for whatever version of Internet Explorer you have installed. This will be IE6, IE7, or IE8 (if you're doing a fresh install of Windows XP it will naturally be IE6). This will upgrade the various components of your Internet Explorer installation. Thereafter Windows Update will perform as it should.

    The secret is to install the LATEST Cumulative Security Update for your version of Internet Explorer. This is a recurring problem so the current latest versions keep getting updated each month.

    The latest updates are dated November 2013 (as of writing this).
    Download and install the update that corresponds with your currently installed version of Internet Explorer:

    For those of you who are suffering from this issue, I can confirm that updating Internet Explorer is not a reliable solution. For some, it may help, but for others, it won't, and I've noticed no common pattern there. I've seen different people with very different systems complain about this issue, and neither updating to the latest IE version nor installing the latest IE updates will reliably help everyone.

    The only "solution" I have been able to even just somewhat confirm is that SVCHOST.exe isn't really quite mortally stuck, it just takes a hell of a long while to do its thing, but it will eventually finish and proceed with the updates. One user clocked 75 minutes of 100 % CPU usage before it moved on, but it eventually did (no user interaction needed).

    Wish I actually knew what this was about, but with no non-virtual XP systems left around here, I can't properly experiment.

    @ronjor, thanks for the link.
    The only reason I can see Microsoft fixing this bug is for the customers that will spend big bucks for continued support of XP otherwise why spend resources to fix an OS that will lose support for the majority of users in 2014.

    It is always possible that something else is causing your Windows Update failure.
    Windows Update under XP has always had problems - many things can cause it to fail.
    The application of the Cumulative Update only fixes one specific bug.

    The current issue has a few specific symptoms:
    1. The update process gets stuck in the searching for updates phase
    2. The Windows Update Agent running inside an svchost shell runs one CPU core at 100%
    3. Stopping the Automatic Update service kills the CPU overload
    4. Disabling Automatic Updates stops the problem returning
    5. There is no Windows Update error recorded in the Event Log or History - unlike most other faults

    Have you checked the Event Log or Windows Update History for an error code?

    Well I have had this issue now during the last three update tuesdays, so I have disabled the WU permanently in the control panel so the OS won't even check for them, and everything I have tried does not change the svchost behavior a bit. So i'll wait to see if MS finally comes out with a fix for this, till then WU stays disabled that's for sure. :)

    All I did was to turn off the Windows Update completely to make the issue go away.

    From the control panel launch Windows security center and then from there disable WU.

    This seems to be a fairly common problem this year and with XP computers. However not specific to just XP, seen it happen with Vista and no infections that could count for such occurrences.

    As already determined here, the obvious issue is with Windows SVCHOST.EXE process and very high and constant CPU usage. The commandline parameter used is '-k netsvcs' which doesn't pen-point exactly the service. However so far most experiences I observed here are related to the Windows Update service. A simple workaround but not recommended is to simply disable / turn off WU.

    If you go little deeper you'd see the wuaueng.dll WU component being the culprit under SVCHOST.EXE process.

    The common fix on the net seems to be stopping the WU service and renaming or removing SoftwareDistribution folder and starting WU service back up. Thing to note that this will cause your WU history to be refreshed.

    You may see WU warnings or errors in Event Viewer.

    If anyone wants to troubleshoot, having a copy of :\WINDOWS\WindowsUpdate.log would help.

    That little bit don't indicate much problems.

    I understand how you feel. If things changes, here is couple of considerations.

    SoftwareDistribution may very well be corrupted. You probably aware what you could do. But ultimately renaming SoftwareDistribution folder and re-booting might be something to try if you haven't already. SoftwareDistribution location contains Windows Update history, so renaming will also give that a refreshed state. But you could restore the history from the renamed folder if things seems to be okay.

    Also would be interesting to know if exactly the culprit is from the following;

    wuaueng.dll > SVCHOST.EXE -k netsvcs

    Hmmm sorry to hear that J_L :(

    With that info in mind I will let my WU stay disabled it's not worth trying, and instead get going with the manual install method tomorrow at least I know that works :)

    Have had this problem the last few months on a computer at work. After some messing around with different fixes posted online it eventually works... gets kind of annoying since I don't have a reliable fix for it.

    Happening again today with the new updates as well :(

    Microsoft released a new "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer" today (10th December 2013) - MS13-097: KB2898785 - but have not yet fixed the XP update bug. So we are back to the same problem again - a stuck Automatic Updates service running the SVCHOST process at full CPU load (100% or 50% or 25% depending on how many CPU cores you have)

    Microsoft stated last month that the Internet Explorer updates are treated differently for all the other updates - which is causing the XP Update engine to run so slowly as to appear frozen. If the Update service detects you do not have the latest IE update that is currently available it starts to search the whole IE updates tree to see what you need - instead of just offering the current cumulative update for your system. But if you manually install the update yourself the Update service finds Internet Explorer is fully updated and doesn't search for any IE updates. But until MS fix the issue it will keep happening each time a new update is released.

    MS said they intended to prune the IE updates database so that only the key Cumulative updates were offered when a search was initiated - this didn't happen in time for the November updated as intended and obviously has not happened or worked in time for the December update either!
