MerleOne, yes, and create a new .HSH file while you are at it - so you can make diffs on the merged, new full drive...

Wendi, yes, DS141 VSS changes is for business use. Home users won't have too many issues with "normal" VSS, except when you are running large SQL databases

Thanks for the info guys. I remember trying DS a year or more ago, and the problem I was having was after a restore. If I used the 'restore after restart' feature, which was very convenient, it rarely seemed to be a clean restore, certainly not like restoring using DS boot media. Upon reboot after a quick restore, event viewer in Win7 would tell me Volume C was "dirty volume".

I contacted Tom about this, and he suggested I use the VSS option, and even with that, using the restore on restart still would give the 'dirty volume' event after restore. I am hoping Tom was able to fix that part, but he was aware at the time, shortly after offering the restore on restart, it had some bugs and he was very helpful.

Not everyone had the dirty volume issue, but many did. I never bought it at the time because of this issue, but Tom was aware of it and thought it was VSS related. But when I used VSS option, there was still a problem on a quick restore. It is an amazing small and very effective imaging program and I hope he continues to improve it. there are many happy users of it from what i have read.

napoleon, thanks for the heads-up! Would you know if this version actually has any changes from the prior version? - snapshot.exe is the very same size.

Yeah that's been a subject of debate for some time. I know someone (I think on this thread) contacted the developer and he said there are changes made (this was for a previous upgrade). I know he doesn't provide a change log.

As TonioRoffo seems to know about DS development, I wonder if he has insight into this question?

Have you reported this to the developer? I am also running XP Pro (but am still using a DS version a few months old) and would be very interested in whether they have isolated the issue.

Any chance of it being a local issue on your machine?

Did that happen after initiating the DS restore when running in Windows, or from a boot disk? What was the error description?

Thanks for the heads-up napoleon! One of these days I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised to find a user-friendly (GUI) recovery disk included with the DS setup.

I agree Cruise. Tom has a great program, and I have never understood why it appears offering a GUI recovery environment is overlooked.

For the price, I would think it would be something very appreciated by those who use snapshot. I have used the DOS boot disk before, and it is fine in most cases, but I would think a basic WinPe including a copy of snapshot.exe would be a great selling feature. He could implement a WinPe media builder similar to Lazesoft that downloads the basic Boot.WIM file from MS, and then builds the boot media.

Maybe some day. The recovery media was one of the reasons I chose not to buy snapshot when I first looked at and trialed it 2 years ago or so. I just think if one offers a good imaging program such as Tom has, why not offer as good a recovery boot disk to complete the package? It is after all one of the most important features to be able to recover with ease and maybe a nice GUI. I am sure Tom has his reasons, and I respect them, it just baffles me sometimes that he does not pursue a better recovery option.

Jim,

My hope for a GUI boot disk isn't aiming so high as a WinPE disk - I would gladly settle for something like the IFD-GUI boot disk!

Good point Cruise. I certainly agree. In any case, it would make it a much more complete package in my opinion. Let us hope Tom arrives at the same conclusion. I really think it would be a boost in sales and offer a better recovery environment overall, making it an easier process to restore images.

Frankly, that (not the price difference) was the deal-breaker for me when deciding between DS and the 'Terabyte Trio'. I and many others have written to Tom about this over the years, but it seems to 'fall on deaf-ears'.

Any standard Win7 install CD can be used as a GUI restore environment. Please check the document I linked earlier in the thread.

I really don't see an advantage in an included bootcd.

A WinPE builder would be nice though - but really, the only cmdline stuff you need to do afte booting the win7 install CD is press shift-f10 and a few commands to start networking & mapping a network drive. After that, you can use the DS GUI to restore.

I realize all of that Tonio, but imho DOS is a more reliable recovery environment than WinPE (although not nearly as nice). I have experienced situations where WinPE could not 'see' my partitions but DOS had no problem, so I would prefer a user-friendly DOS recovery disk. In that regard I consider the IFD (GUI version) boot disk an excellent example and I can't understand why Tom won't develop and include a like boot disk for DS. That should be a piece of cake for someone with his skills. The existing DS boot disk is archaic and having to enter DOS commands is error-prone!
