Canonical asks desktop users to "pay what you think Ubuntu is worth"

Ubuntu will always be FREE but no company can develop applications for free. So while Canonical will still give away Ubuntu - this might change with applications on it.

Like it or not - payware is coming to Linux.

 

This isn't payware. New York museums have a similar policy - pay what you want. You can still get in.

 

There's nothing wrong with asking for donations.... Those that want to give can do so, and those that don't can continue to download and use it. Sounds like they're just asking for a little support from those who care and want to support it.

 

They are adding advertisements into Ubuntu and now they want donations?

 

What kind of ads, and where?

I will gladly contribute to Ubuntu, whenever the occasion arises, for supplying me an excellent OS (though I hate Unity). They have been a great joy of mine for a number of years.

Ads? Those are not ads but online search results. Other search lenses, e.g. for Wikipedia, are in preparation. Besides, there have been modifications for the Amazon issue.

Ubuntu needs to sustain to be a viable alternative to Windows and Mac, they have done considerably better than the rest with their approach and I see no wrong in this.

Yes, they are. And one can very very easily disable this. Typing in 'Privacy' allows you to control everything logged, reported, etc.

The exact purpose of the dash is to find what you're looking for - to search for anything related to the keyword entered. This is one more way to do this.

I would have preferred they do something better like providing Google, Yahoo, Bing, DDG, and Amazon so you can choose where you get your results. They could have likely made a lot of money this way too. It would be a feature I'd like to see.

Yes but it shouldn't be there in the first place. Microsoft doesn't put add's in their OS because they make $ from selling licenses. Ubuntu makes $ from providing support, this just a huge step back for Ubuntu and will alienate many people.

 

Its their choice what to do...

I would assume that the donations pay the developers, not Shuttleworth, seeing as that would probably qualify as fraud.

How about no. Dissing the MS developers (and probably getting rooted in the process) does not appeal to me.

 

It was just a retort, ironically in most parts of the world where my team deploys Ubuntu, the users were previously on pirated MS Windows and Office. They were made to realize the sense in adapting open source.
