Need Advice >>> re Disc Flame out.

Arrgghh:

Unbootable box after collapse of HD controller on system disc
Lost partition table
Partially recoverable data structure: all essentials backed up elsewhere.
Could not recover FDISR .arx files


Have fresh FDISR Archive.arx made in the days leading up to disc flop.

Have SP images: made twice weekly
_ on external discs

Not used to restoring to NEW disc (ie new HW) with either really.

Got a bit ahead of myself:
Have done fresh install of base XPSP3 and updated on New disc.
Same HW as flame-out disc: Manufacturer+ size+ SATA
Activated XP.

Have installed FDISR: can I pull the Archive.arx file in and boot to it.??
Will there be a problem with "old" system on new HW ??

Had forgotten that SP Desktop can do Bare Metal/HIR - Duh:
If I do restore with SP to New ( ie different) disc and new XP install : will here be a problem with drivers or MS activation ??


Really it's been a while since clean install: years.
Am I just better ... to go on from here?
Just a lot of rebooting over weekend !!

When you restore an image to a new drive you can use any brand of new drive, any size (as long as the restored partition will fit) and even an IDE or SATA drive different from the old drive (if you know how to install drivers to an offline system). The new OS partition will be a clone of the old OS. All programs will work and Windows will be Activated.

In general you leave the new HD blank, no partitions. Boot your SP CD and restore your image. It should be a straight forward process.

In your case you have installed a new WinXP. That was a waste of time because when you restore your image to that partition all your hard work will disappear.

Yeah: forgot about the blank disc restore option in desktop.
Obviously, save a lot of extra reactivation agro too.
