Wow.

So "12,367,232 Apple iOS devices" were listed in "NCFTA_iOS_devices_intel.csv” on his notebook. The filename is ambiguous. They could either be NCFTA volunteers, or potential suspects named by NCFTA members. Time will tell. If it's the latter, maybe some interesting FOIA releases will be forthcoming

The FBI seems to have countered as discussed in the following linked article:

FBI Says AntiSec Hackers Lied About List of iPhone ID Numbers.

The FBI is supposed to make a statement as to why such sensitve data was doing on a laptop in the first place and how AntiSec hacked it.

I caught the wink, but what if he was a double-agent? Seriously. If he was working with Anonymous (used as umbrella term here only) as an "inside source" with the FBI (Stangl did have connections with the hacking community); what if they had evidence he was using his connections to feed FBI/NSA/DHS damning information? How would they get back? Maybe by hacking his personal computer? Finding things they never expected? Exposed.

Just a thought.

So unencrypted data on a laptop that was not secured properly... Not surprising in the least.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is refuting a statement made by members of AntiSec this weekend that they hacked the laptop of an FBI special agent and stole a file containing 12 million Apple device IDs and associated personal information.

The FBI also said it did not possess a file containing the data the hackers said they stole.

In a statement released Tuesday afternoon, the FBI said, “The FBI is aware of published reports alleging that an FBI laptop was compromised and private data regarding Apple UDIDs was exposed. At this time there is no evidence indicating that an FBI laptop was compromised or that the FBI either sought or obtained this data.”

I operate like a firewall nowadays - Default Deny is Default Lie when it comes to this stuff. No way this would ever be admitted to. Just my opinion, and yes I own tinfoil.

No, but there's still no way to tell who's telling the truth. AntiSec is a hacking group, so it's very possible they grabbed the UUID's from somewhere else and then blamed it on the FBI. They will need to provide more proof.

If the file they obtained was called Avatar.m2ts, that agent would be in jail and his hard drive would be shipped to New Zealand for forensic discovery

The "proof" is classified. Julian Assange exposed the "proof" and look where it got him...

Hi
The main mantra and religion for secret services is not "In the Truth we trust" but "In the Secret we believe"...
Just check the History of FBI from Hoover, to the Magic Lantern, Carnivore and other stories http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_Lantern_(software)
Most western military and security agencies have been attacked and there was not a lot of buzz about it, or only to get some budget at the Congress/White House for the Cyberwar...
As KNOWN examples with Titan Rain and Aurora atack
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titan_Rain http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Aurora

Even forums like this board are spied in order to check and manipulate citizen opinions http://cryptome.org/2012/07/gent-forum-spies.htm
Then lets be serious and stop all kind of angelism...
Risk of terrorism does not justify all kinds of human rights violations...

EXCLUSIVE: The real source of Apple device IDs leaked by Anonymous last week

By Kerry Sanders and Bob Sullivan, NBC News

A small Florida publishing company says the million-record database of Apple gadget identifiers released last week by the hacker group Anonymous was stolen from its servers two weeks ago. The admission, delivered by the company’s CEO exclusively to NBC News, contradicts Anonymous' claim that the hacker group stole the data from an FBI agent's laptop in March.

I'd be more inclined to believe Anonymous than that story.

So to recap...

Quote:
FBI: "The FBI is aware of published reports alleging that an FBI laptop was compromised and private data regarding Apple UDIDs was exposed. At this time there is no evidence indicating that an FBI laptop was compromised or that the FBI either sought or obtained this data." (AllThingsD)
Quote:
Apple: "The FBI has not requested this information from Apple, nor have we provided it to the FBI or any organization. Additionally, with iOS 6 we introduced a new set of APIs meant to replace the use of the UDID and will soon be banning the use of UDID." (AllThingsD)
Quote:
BlueToad CEO (Paul DeHart): "That's 100 percent confidence level, it's our data," DeHart said. "As soon as we found out we were involved and victimized, we approached the appropriate law enforcement officials, and we began to take steps to come forward, clear the record and take responsibility for this.” (NBC News)
Yet, I'm sure that there will still be conspiracy theorists that will continue to claim that AntiSec is telling the truth, and that all of the above statements are just cover-up. Bluetoad is just a paid fall-guy... heck, maybe they are a front for the NSA. (gasp). It's apparently difficult to believe that perhaps AntiSec just wanted to maliciously dump the data they found, and gloss over the matter of their intentions by false claims of 'protecting the common man from Big Brother.'

Apple Device IDs Leaked by Anonymous Traced to App Developer Blue Toad
Quote:
Those Apple device IDs that an Anonymous offshoot claimed to have hacked from an FBI agent’s computer in March appear to have actually originated just weeks ago from the hack of a little-known app development company in Florida.

Thanks to some stellar sleuthing by a computer security consultant, the source of the Apple device IDs leaked to the internet by AntiSec last week has been traced to an application developer called Blue Toad.

David Schuetz, a security consultant with Intrepidus Group, described his method for tracing the ID's to Blue Toad in a blog post on Monday.

@ kareldjag

Thanks for the link to the http://cryptome.org article VERY revealing & PROVES it, has/can/does happen, & "seemingly" EVERY day ! by the sounds of it

Funny, because i've noticed, & suspected for quite a number of years, that "certain" posters on various forums, use Very similar tactics The good news is that, we Know what there modus operandi is, & can post in ways that counter theirs

Statement from BlueToad regarding the cyber attack suffered in the recent case of stolen Apple UDIDs

Written by Paul DeHart, CEO and President

A little more than a week ago, BlueToad was the victim of a criminal cyber attack, which resulted in the theft of Apple UDIDs from our systems. Shortly thereafter, an unknown group posted these UDIDs on the Internet.
At BlueToad, we understand the importance of protecting the safety and security of information contained on our systems.
